Buck "Survival" Knife?

Never gave my Ergo Hunter a thought.

I haven't really used that one yet. But I think it would fit in well here.

I'd go for the Selkirk, with a 124 in a close second.

Now if a Selkirk were made in USA with S30V... THAT would be in a whole 'nuther league!

For this situation I would go with the Hoodlum. A long blade would make it easier to clear brush to get from point A to B and for chopping up branches for shelter and fire. It's size would make me feel safe too.

I'll stick with the 110 ... and sneak a 301 in, inside my boot, or under my hat. :)

Since it hasn't been mentioned yet:
Intrepid 187 with tip modification

Did the 189 come with a tanto style tip? I like your modification. About a 7" blade? DM

Okay guys, this is getting a little confusing, so we need a few rules to help me out. If you have already voted and want to change, that's fine. Just make it clear which knife you first selected and which one you are changing to. Some of you are voting for the same knife that you voted for a few months ago. I'm trying to keep this accurate and I keep going back through the entire thread to make sure there are no overlaps.

Updates include 5 new votes and a change for Haebbie. Keep'em coming! The more votes, the better the survey. :)

On second thought, I'm sorry to be a PITA, but I'm chaining out the Selkirk for a 124.

Looks like there's a preference for a fixed blade by a 3 to 1 margin.
Fixed blades - 46

The question you asked was
Your gear consists of a firestarter, compass, stainless water bottle, and a tarp, but somehow magically, you get to choose one Buck knife (past or present model) for all your survival needs.

keying on the word, "magically", I'll change my vote from the 486 Bucklite Max folder to the 060 Hoodlum. I mean, if it's going to just appear, by magic, why not? No weight penalty.

An entirely different question that might generate different answers might be, "What Buck knife do you never ever go into the woods without?" For that, for me, it's the 486.

And "magically" your vote has been switched. :) Nice photo, BTW.

And just like that, the 124 takes a two vote lead. Speaking of the 124, I'm still impressed that the guard is soldered to the tang. Buck needs to advertise this feature. Not many production companies take this step. I had no idea until someone posted this photo.

I'd pick the Selkirk, being a drop-point with a blade in the 4" to 5" range. I don't actually have one, but of Buck's knives that i know about (and I'm not familiar with all the variety there has been), that's the one that comes closest to my Condor Kephart, which would be "it."

Tom, I'm impressed too. I had thought they used aluminum for the guards. Glad to know it's steel.

Hi Sam, the 124 guard is aluminum. Very early ones were steel. Now just to confirm - aluminum can be soldered to stainless, correct?

Thanks AreBeeBee! Good choice on the Selkirk.
