I'll try to keep this short.

I was doing some yard work on Thursday and my neighbor/son's friend asked if I'd sharpen his new knife. He graduated high school last year so he's only 18 or 19. Not a lot of experience with sharpening so I said I'd help him out.

Just so you know what kind of kid he is, he doesn't do drugs, takes care of things around the house, has a nice S-10 pick-up that he worked hard to get, is in college, a big paint baller and jet-skier. A suburban kid that has done alright with dad not being much of a mentor. He's recently taken up fishing too.

So he brought his new knife over...

 (The Mora is mine and there for scale)

Yep. The proverbial hollow handle, saw-back, "ultimate", Rambo style survival knife!!!

A couple F&F shots:

Review:

I sharpened it up and took the edge to a 3000 grit strop. Nothing fancy.

I was able to get some curls on a piece of dry Maple. As you can see, the butt cap doesn't bottom out without the guard. Even with the guard it's not real good.

Chopping:

I didn't want to lean into it so I did some light chopping on the same maple.

And finally, the saw. I made 10 swipes with the saw from the guard to the end of the saw teeth. It cut about 1/16" into the wood. The cut next to it is 10 swipes with a SAK Farmer. That blade was about 1/4" deep.

After it's quick testing the edge wasn't chipped or rolled. The handle wasn't lose. And the thing didn't explode and send Taiwanese stainless shrapnel into my flesh.:p

Overall, it's just what we'd expect. Nothing I'd trust in a survival situation but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to play with one even if it was only for 10 minutes. You'd have done the same;).

Not to worry. I've already seen that the kid is slowly heeding the call of the outdoors. I'm going to order a Mora stainless clipper for him and a couple real survival items for him. I've got an extra ferocium rod, some fatwood, and a couple other things I'll be passing on to him as well.

Thanks for looking.
Chris

Cool Rupe. Too bad its only plain Jane stainless and not molecular 420 steel. That stuff was awesome !!!

Bless you for giving the kid a hand, Because of family breakups and such, to many kids never get pointed toward the outdoor life, we need the younger guys to keep our woods and public lands up for the next generation.

Good on you for helping him out. I remember when I had one of them 10-15 years ago. Was an interesting piece back then.

Talk about flashbacks! I had something similar back in the 80s. Good for you helping him out.

I remember the lure of that type of knife when I was younger.

Nice of you to help him out, i'm sure once he starts doing proper stuff in the woods and sees the performance of this blade compared to a Mora or even a Condor he'll soon graduate to better knives.

Get that boy a Hudson Bay! :D:thumbup:

I bought a similar junk knife when I was about 8. By the time I was 10 I realized it was a real piece of crap.

Lots of kids get lured in to those Rambo knives. Get him a Mora. :D

I've seen grown men that think knives like that are all that's out there ! I'm a big fan of finding quality knives for low money and the mora is right up that ally.
Yea , get him a Mora for $20 and you can know you were the man that turned him onto quality cutlery.

Yup, great job at trying to point him in the right direction without looking down on his current choices. Heck, I STILL want a vintage Buckmaster if I could find one!!

You and me both... I think the Rambo series of films (and those of a similar genre) had a massive influence on how "Joe Public" looked at knives from then on, just look at the influx of Rambo Specials you could pick up in the dollar stores of the day, Crocodile Dundee didn't harm Bowie style knive's popularity either :D

Awesome of you to help him out. Not everyone has a guide to figure out what they need to get pointed in the right direction as far as skills and equipment go. Its always nice to hear stories like this, I am sure he will appreciate your generocity.

Chris, good on ya' for watching out for this kid and getting him some real gear. Must feel good - way to go!
