I'll try to keep this short.
I was doing some yard work on Thursday and my neighbor/son's friend asked if I'd sharpen his new knife. He graduated high school last year so he's only 18 or 19. Not a lot of experience with sharpening so I said I'd help him out.
Just so you know what kind of kid he is, he doesn't do drugs, takes care of things around the house, has a nice S-10 pick-up that he worked hard to get, is in college, a big paint baller and jet-skier. A suburban kid that has done alright with dad not being much of a mentor. He's recently taken up fishing too.
So he brought his new knife over...
(The Mora is mine and there for scale)
Yep. The proverbial hollow handle, saw-back, "ultimate", Rambo style survival knife!!!
A couple F&F shots:
Review:
I sharpened it up and took the edge to a 3000 grit strop. Nothing fancy.
I was able to get some curls on a piece of dry Maple. As you can see, the butt cap doesn't bottom out without the guard. Even with the guard it's not real good.
Chopping:
I didn't want to lean into it so I did some light chopping on the same maple.
And finally, the saw. I made 10 swipes with the saw from the guard to the end of the saw teeth. It cut about 1/16" into the wood. The cut next to it is 10 swipes with a SAK Farmer. That blade was about 1/4" deep.
After it's quick testing the edge wasn't chipped or rolled. The handle wasn't lose. And the thing didn't explode and send Taiwanese stainless shrapnel into my flesh.
Overall, it's just what we'd expect. Nothing I'd trust in a survival situation but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to play with one even if it was only for 10 minutes. You'd have done the same
.
Not to worry. I've already seen that the kid is slowly heeding the call of the outdoors. I'm going to order a Mora stainless clipper for him and a couple real survival items for him. I've got an extra ferocium rod, some fatwood, and a couple other things I'll be passing on to him as well.
Thanks for looking.
