Bulldog.

Who makes them?
What is the quality?
How do folk here rate them?
How do they compare to Boker and Henkel?

Thanks

Neeman---For the price(GOOD) get one and test-drive it! German made and the knives look like good quality. I ordered a Soddie and will post when I get it. Other's will chime in with a better report.

I love mine. No blade play,F/F is excellent. I have the older 2 pitbulls fighting, which may be better quality than the new ones, I'm not sure. The masterblade had an imperfection on the tang so they welded a small bead on it to even it out.

As far as feel, they are different than Boker. They seem more jewel like, more delicate in their feel, a bit like Case Knives. One could say, a bit less sturdy than say Boker. Puma is the extreme oppisite as far as German knives. I wouldn't describe the Bulldog as a workman knife, more as a work of art, or maybe a gentleman's knife.

They are also some of my favorite knives. Hope this helps.

AFAIK the BulldogBrand is produced in the same factory as the Weidmannsheil and Fight´n Rooster knives. I think it´s Olbertz in Solingen, Germany.

If you try to google for any of those three "manufacturers" you won´t find a website.:D

IMHO those are typical "Eb.."-brands such as Newton&Sons in the watch segment.

But: Quality is reasonable for the money rating.

Hope this helps and cheers from Germany.

They sure are pretty. Great handles. Cool etches on the blades. I love these wharncliff whittlers, Thor and The Seductress. The bone handled medium stockman seems real solid too.

I haven't used them but I've read that older ones were better made. That may have just been one persons opinion though.

NOPE...for sure the older ones were of better built quality...but the same goes for Puma etc.

BTW: Here are my Bulldogs:

...and a Weidmannsheil, see the same measurements of the sunfish / Elephant toe pattern, etching, box??? (Therefore same manufacturer as I guess).

I can't really say the older ones are better.Just thought they changed hands with the different trademark. I can't say as I agree with Peter about them being delicate either. Mine is as stout as they get, it just hurts a little when you scratch up that beautiful etch when you use them.

911, what do you mean by "EB...." brands?

The Sowbelly I own is possibly one of my favorites. Not crazy for the stag so I made it a user because of that, but I'm not sorry about it for it performs well and is comfortable in the pocket.Nice steel.

The electronical bay (or so).:D

In former times the Weidmannsheil knives were produced at Diefenthal in Solingen, but if you have a closer look at my pics above you´ll have to admit that BulldogBrand and Weidmannsheil come from the same factory, right?;)

I must be one of the few with bad experience with Bulldog knives. I bought a few several years ago from Jim Parker and the steel was awful. Wouldn't take or hold a good edge. Showed it to some industry insiders (makers, etc) and their verdict was the same.

Maybe it was just a bad batch of steel at the time.

I´m not too convinced about their quality either, for that reason I try to sell them.;)

But maybe I´m only too used to the quality of vintage Pumas, Cases, Bucks, Schrades etc...

navihawk--- You'll know if that knife is good or not. If the Bulldog's are junk, you'd be hearing a lot of complaints! If you're not satisfied, send it back.

Interesting. Explains where the vintage Weidmannsheil parts come from for the newly-built, vintage parts- knives that Parker's KCS advertises (they are also big into Bulldog).

I wonder if I got a good one? You guys are making me rethink this...

Steve,

I wouldn't worry as long as the blade sharpens up okay and does what you want.

I remember a few years ago hearing some others besides myself with similar isues but again I don't recall if the problems with the blades were localized in time which might indicate a problem either with steel or the heat treat process during a run or two.

This is a good thread with differences of opinions. I think thats great. What I mean by rethinking is my new lust for Schrades among a few others.
The German Cutlers I think are different in their ways. It's hard to explain, but they have a certain rough looking hand made quality about them, Where as American made (older) and Sheffield the F/F is more precise.
I've always wanted to start a thread discussing the quality of American Vs. German Vs. English. I think the most American Companies were English born.

I've never given the Bulldog any hard use exept to open a box or similar. Anything beyond that the Wave steps in.The Bulldog is like a trophy Wife. It looks good.:D

German?...PUMA, but only vitage ones:thumbup:

American?...I really love many of your brands over there.:)

English?...I have no clue since they´re not my cup of coffee (or shall I say tea:confused:).:p
