Hello all,

I own a Fallkniven F1 with black blade. Although it is fine as a bushcraft knife, I am looking for a blade that is less tactical looking.

I was considering an RC-3, but have changed my mind.

This is what I would like in a bushcraft knife:

- 4" Satin blade and wood handles
- Easy to sharpen
- Rust resistant
- Full tang
- A decent guard
- Drop point preferably
- Less than $150.00

Which would you suggest that meet my criteria?

Thanks!

Frank

Well, besides the satin blade and wood handles the Koster Bushcraft would be a good choice. Koster might even be able to do those two requests as well. I LOVE my Koster Bushcraft.

Maybe someone could rehandle your Falkniven F1 - and refinish the blade. It's Japaneese laminated VG10 steel blade is reportedly quite good.

If you want to keep the F1 as-is, I'd look at the Fox River and Gameskeeper - I love mine. Definite keepers. The Gameskeeper has a finger guard - and thicker (.215" vs .170") A2 blade - quite a comfortable handful. The convex grind is quite sharp - and they come with a finely made leather sheath, the Fox River even having a firesteel loop. Their basic handle material is Micarta - with upgrades to various woods, bone, and stag and even dress-up mossaic pins. I love Micarta & solid pins - they allow me to own more Bark Rivers.

The bark rivers would be good. You might want to consider the 'Large Workhorse knife' by Blindhorse knives from the link below.

I have the RC-4, and while it has a coated blade, I don't think it looks overly tactical. In June this year, the RC-3 and RC-4 will come out with a desert tan version - with a white coated blade and tan mircata handle. These are great lookers!

Another vote for Dan Koster, although his in 3V are harder to sharpen. He can make you one in 01 but then it's not as rust resistant.

Easy to sharpen and rust resistant sort of don't go together unless you are buying a coated blade but coated blades and cutting efficiency don't go together that well either

If you want to get rid of the "tactical" look, just use a little fine wet/dry sandpaper on the blade of the F1. It will come off, and it's almost free.

Buy an F1 blade blank and handle it yourself or commission one of the talented guys on here to do it for you.

Alternatively, get one of the superb Enzo blades / kits / knives from Denis at Brisa

Or something like this that has a blade lenght of 5" and is 7/64ths of an in
thick 1" wide blade and has a 4.5 " handle very rounded handle. Here is
a couple of sheaths I made for it. and here is what they can do if you
like carving.

I did a preview post and this pic did not come out very good but you get the idea of the blade shape.

the bottom sheath was made in a hurry just to keep the knife in till I made up
the top sheath (it's a long story)

This last pic is of a mullbery branch that I battoned through and then made these carvings. ( fuzz sticks )

I know your specs were you would like it to be a stainless and have a
guard The two things I do not make But it is another option. If you
are interested I can be contacted at tacklebreeden@yahoo.com or

Those are some seriouse fuzz sticks bryan. Some of the best I have seen. What knife did you use for those?

I would probably second the motion for a Bark River Northstar (or a Bravo-1 or Camp Knife)

As Mike said, the Northstar is a nice bushcraft knife....

...as is the Highland Special (very much like a Fox River):

Then again, lately I've really been getting into these Scandinavian knives. This Helle Symfoni is making my Barkies a little jealous - I can get it so sharp they feel threatened!

Those fuzz sticks were made by what I call the Kelly knife. Just started another one
last night and will finish and start two more today and finsh them monday. Then I am
out of that thickness of steel untill my order comes in. Hopefully monday.
