looking for a hardcore Survival knife... not a hiking knife.. i just got out of the swamp form one hell of a rain last night.. :grumpy: without a tint and bare feet with just cloths.. like i said.. hardcore.

wanted to know what you think of the busse hellrazor? how good dose it stand up with rust and cuting/chopping and all the other stuff.. what do you think of it? or is it just a put up and never use knife..

or do you think i should get somthing else? looking for a bowie type knife like the hellrazor, 300$ is max for me.

p.s will have to deal with saltwater.

The HR is INFI, so it's super tough and will handle anything you throw at it and then some. Not to mention it has a lifetime, no questions asked warrenty. INFI is very rust resistant compared to other carbon steels. It stands up to most high carbon stainless steels, actually. I used the one I had to chop, and it worked just fine. You may want to hold out for a large, chopping model, though. However, that will most likely exceed your price range.

lowlux;
I don't have a great knowledge of all of the Busse knives, I am not a Bussephile, however, I have just gotten a Hell Razor in desert tan with the non magnum handle, a limited addition serialized Satin Jack, and finally I got one of the HEAVY HEARTS with the non magnum handle.
I think the Hell Razor would make a great camp and trail knife since it is lighter in weight then my other two. I should stand up to just about anything you can expect a knife to do and yes, INFI does seem to hold up around salt water if giving a minimum about of PM.
The Satin Jack is kind of the middle weight without any coating on the blade so it might not stand up as well around the salt water as a coated blade.

Now, if you are talking "HEAVY DUTY" then the Heavy Heart is the big boy for you. Mine has a thick black coating and I think the blade is made from 1/4" stock. I suppose this knife would withstand just about anything except maybe a nuclear blast and according to those who know Busse knives indicate that it will just laugh at your abuse and beg for more.

Thats is about my total knowledge of the Busse knives. Some of the other knives I have that might also suite you are the Tridet Custom line made of S30V and build to take on almost anything up to a M-80 tank.
The other brand that will surly take the abuse but would not be so good around salt water are the Fehrman knives which are made out of CPM3V which is not known to do so well around salty environments.

In closing, unless you plan to tear down houses and fall trees I would bet that the Hell Razor would suite you just fine and there are only a few left at the Busse Company Store so you better jump on it!

Ciao

lowlux,
I don't know if they are going to make them again soon. From what I am seeing on the Busse pages indicates that Busse will make a model and after they sell out you are not likely to see them again for at least a year.

Go to the manufacutures page and scroll down to Busse Knives and ask around there where the Busse knowledge resides.

Good luck

If ya got the chedder, you CANT go wrong with a Busse..

I myself have a Ranger budget and couldnt be happier with it, but I do plan on adding a Hell Razor to my collection!

Yes the HR is out of production. But soon they will be making the FBM which i beleive would be the perfect knife for you. Also consider The new line of Swamprat knives. The arent so pricey.

I own 2 HR's and i love them but i dont think they are adeaquate enough for the type of chopping that you would use them for. They are really a combat knife. The upcoming Fusion Battle mistress will be big enough to chop li9ke crazy. But as to busse toughness, They are fricking bomb proof.

Have a look at Samurai Bowie by G-Sakai (many Spyderco models (if not all) are made by them). The one from SRS15 High Speed Stainless PM Steel. So far I am very impressed by their performance.

Also Taiga by RosArms with stainless ball bearing steel (like american BG-42) and most ergonomic, most comfortable design I ever see. Prooven by generatons of Russian hunters and outdoorsmans.

Thanks, Vassili.

Got mine about a month ago in desert tan. I have not been out in the field with it yet but have almost completed a suitable leather sheath for it in anticipation. Too many in town commitments have kept me from the mountains so far this year...

It does not feel the least bit heavy, yet it has the feel of a very stout blade. I know that it would easily hold my weight if I had to utilize it as a step stuck in a crevice or crack in rock, ice, tree, haybale stack(?), building or otherwise; it will be good for batoning what with the guiding concavity in the back of the blade and it is INFI for crying out loud. It is now my official BFK and a good one it'll be. I wish the magnum scales were standard though.

Sure, you could get another knife, but I don't think there is a company with a higher satisfaction rate than Busse Combat. Once you get your hands on one, that is. ;)

Wouldnt something as simple as a Kabar 1095 utility knife work? BTW. How is the rust resistance on 1095 steel. I was thinking of taking mine out on the lake/ocean with me, not diving, just out there. Like if i just wiped it down when I was finished, would it be okay?

To some degree everything works, with higher quality knives you get better performance, durability, consistency, customer support etc. .

BTW. How is the rust resistance on 1095 steel.

Very low, it has next to no corrosion resistance at all and takes a patina very quickly. This just means that the edge retention is low in humid enviroments or media, the knife won't suffer gross damage. In extended soaks there may be issues with the tang rusting depending on the handle construction but this is a long term issue.

Get the Hell razor from the company store now before they are gone. You can't go wrong and if you don't like it, you can sell it for what you paid and then some if they are all sold out. You can't go wrong.

I think Hell Razor is a great knife - especially for people who walk a lot. It's quite big - but not too heavy - since it's 3/16, ( strangely mine Hell Rzaor is noticeably thicker than my also 3/16 Howling Rat??:D  ) Maybe it's not the best chopper - but it surely will do well in a survival situation. It slices nicely, handles great and because it's quite wide - you can dig with it. It also has a strong point - but thanks to a swedge - with good piercing possibilities. So a survival tool and a fighter in one! I LOVE my HR! It's much UNDERRATED Busse knife.
Like Cobalt said Buy it Try it and if you don't like it - you'll sell it with no problems.

Ive handled my cousin's razor. Side by side with the chris reeve warrior knife. I like the lines of the haressay design alot better. But for chopping the razor is pretty good. Id prefer a swamp rat mastff if you could get one. Now there is a budget chopper.
