But what the heck is a karambit for?

This is just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth, but the karambit is a fighting knife designed to appeal to mall ninjas. Looks like you could slash pretty good with it, but there's no useful point, and no provision for a backstroke.

Not being a knife fighter myself, though, I could be wrong.

Not meaning to thread jack.

So don't. :)
Nothing to do with the original post.
So easy to start a new thread.

Kerambits were originally small sickles, used by Southeast Asian farmers. As with many peoples, they used their work tools as weapons, when necessary, and found the kerambit was a good utility cutter AND a dangerous close-quarters fighting knife. Think of it as a hawksbill blade with a retention ring.

a karambit was created as a farming tool in the phillipines, malaysia, and indonesia, and greatly varied in size. Like many old farming tools it was also used by farmers for self defense against bandits and such. It was and is a weapon used prominently in kali, escrima, silat, and other fillipino martial arts. During the 90's it became more popular to carry and FMA became more popular as well. It can be an extremely effective self defense weapon if known how to use properly. But it also offers the same utilitarian benefits as any other hawkbill type blade. Hope that helps

A karambit can deliver some really wicked cuts.

However with a regular knife you (slice) bare skin, with a karambit it "digs" into the flesh and cuts/tears.

From what I've read once you learn a a little training they can be effective. Without any sort of training your just a bumbling fool.

Also, like balisongs (which can also appeal to mall ninja's) there's really no middle ground. There are the a cheap-ass crappy karambit and then some nice ones.

What the heck is any knife for?

To cut something. The karambit just has a curved blade.

No, you don't have to be a "knife fighter", or a mushroom farmer to appreciate the usefulness of the karambit.

With a balisong, there are a few good cheap one's.
I have the M-Tech twist, and people have equally compared them to the Bradley Kimura II.

i carry a kerambit every day at work, and i dont think i am a mall ninja.

In some areas, hawkbill/curved blades are prohibited, so that rules out most karambit designs.

For a utility knife, there are superior and more economic options.

He could be an Air Marshal, according to wikipedia they are used in the event that a Marshal's firearm is grabbed by an attacker.

No disrespect, morimotom, but what do you DO with it?

carried support side, for primary weapon retention.

if someone grabs my gun, i use my gun hand for retention, and can deploy the kerambit with my support hand and slice away.

in theory, ive never had to do this.

The idea is from nature, its been in use for MILLIONS of years so I don't think mall ninja's are the main reason for its following. K-bits are a ideal tool and weapon because of the physics behind its shape and how the human body's muscles work. They would probably be widely used today is people were not such wimps emotionally.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "thread jacking"?

I believe its when one introduces a statement/post in a thread that has no place in the thread, usually something that will be hard to ignore. See also, to hijack a thread.

What I don't get is why he said that, since this whole thread is about karambits from the start.

Ding ding ding! Get this man a prize!
I get SO damn sick of hearing how this knife or that one is only good as a weapon; it's usually a load of crap.
It's especially a load of crap when it's regarding knives which generally have a blade of 2-3.5 inches.
