I am relitively new to the forum but learned about the Byrd Cara Cara here. I handled a G-10 one that a coworker had and was impressed with the craftmanship for the money. If you like G-10 and SS liners I can say that it is a steal but it was a bit heavy for me. I prefer the FRN Endura as my favorite carry knife so I ordered a couple of the FRN Cara Caras from Spydieguys on Ebay. This knife is great!!!

It has liners and a 4 position clip just like the Endura 4. It also has the grooves on the back of the blade that I like for thumb purchase.

I have not used it yet but I believe others have posted that its steel is comparable to AUS 8 which is fine for my needs. I can't say it will ever replace my Endura 4 but for the money these FRN Cara Cara's will definitely see carry time and I am going to order one for each of my vehicles and my hunting bag and.......well you get the picture.

Just in case anyone was considering buying one but was hesitant (as was I) about the LOW price. Thanks Spyderco for another great product.

Hi Messer,

Thanx for the kind words and welcome to the Spyderco forum.

We now have FRN Cara Cara's, meadowlarks, and finches, with an FRN Robin on the way. This was the original goal with the foursome.

The Stainless version was first. It demonstrates build quality and steel performance. The G-10 versions which followed bring it "up" a notch and the FRN versions say; "I'm light, strong, comfortable, versatile, ergonomic and inexpensive". "work me, work me".

Hey Sal,

Is that FRN Robin gonna be linered or one-piece FRN handle.

Just jumping on a "Byrd Cara Cara G10 is great" thread, to chime in like I always do. I'm still singing mine's praises. If anyone reading this doesn't have a G10 Cara Cara yet, turn off the computer and go buy one right now. You won't regret it.

Hi Max,

The Robin is linered like the Cara & Meadowlark.

Would it be possible to get a rough time frame of when we might expect the Robin to hit dealers? And will there be a G-10 Robin? Thanks for your time, as always.

I bought the all stainless model...it's a bit too heavy for me to EDC. It's not the knife's fault...I don't know what I expected...I mean it is ALL stainless steel.

Otherwise...it's amazing value...astoundingly well made......I know of no better knife value for gift-giving during the upcoming holiday season. Really guys.....for less than a "Jackson" you easily get $50 worth of knife.

-Best

You guys are right. When I bought my first 3 Byrds I thought wow great deals. Then my G 10 Cara came and I thought "DAMN" thats a $100 dollar knife. I like the blade steel as well as VG 10. It takes and holds a screaming sharp edge.

I don't really get this. I respect that Sal and Co. are putting out a solid, affordable product in the Byrd line. But I am lucky enough to be able to afford Spyderco knives (I too favor the FRN Endura), so that's what I buy.*

Now I trust the mounds and mounds of evidence that Byrds are great knives for the money; and I would/do recommend them to others who are looking for a quality knife in that price range to carry and use. And if I ever lose all my knives and simultaneously get so broke that I only have $19 to spend on a knife, I just may buy a Cara Cara (although, truth be told, I'd probably go and sell a pint of blood or whatever to get enough money for a used Endura). Anyway, to each his own.

* I don't want this to come off like a flame, just throwing something out there. Again, I LIKE the fact that the Byrd line exists - smart move by Sal. I also don't buy Opinels, even though I respect that they're a good, cheap knife for the money.

I enjoy owning and using an Opinel......but, yup, to each his own......I needed a "steel" fix and was curious about all the good words I had read about the Cara Cara. Most likely on the same day I bought my Byrd (:D ) someone out there bought a Sebenza. And so it goes.....round and round.....people "makes their choice, and pays their money ." ;)

Ok, so you told us all to turn off the computer and go buy a G-10 Cara Cara, but here's the thing, none of my local dealers actually carry the Cara Cara so I'll have to leave the computer on and order one off the net.

I knew somebody was going to say that when I posted, but I decided to leave the "turn off the computer" part because it sounded more bossy. Though I have seen a few stores carrying Byrds, I have not seen the G10 models in retail yet. I bought mine online because I didn't have a choice. I very much mourn the death of knife retail, but I guess there's no fighting the future. Now buying kinves in person is basically a gun-store-only proposition. Pretty soon I bet we won't have the retail option any more at all.

Sad, so sad. FWIW, I've bought almost all of my Spydies retail to date, with the sole exceptions of my G10 Cara Cara and my Manix.

Well, my local sporting goods emporium carries the Crow and the Black SS Meadowlark but none of the other Byrds.

Got to reading this post and decide to buy the frn cara and the frn meadow lark my wife said she wanted the meadowlark in black so got one of those too they all sould be here monday.

mnblade, I think gramps said it very well.....I was needing a steel fix and decided to see what all the fuss was about concerning the Byrds. Friends and coworkers know I am a knife nut so they ask me what is good for a particular price range (especially at Christmas). No offense but I won't recommend something unless I personally at least handled it. So I guess my reason was two fold. Seven coworkers have already bought a Byrd since seeing mine.

I agree though, I would sell blood for a used Endura if I didn't have one.

So, I got off my butt and ordered a G-10 Meadowlark. I had to wait a few days cuz I'm on campus during the week and I have my knives shipped to my home address. So, I finally got my hands on it on Friday afternoon. I'm a very long winded person most of the time, and I could extoll the virtues of this knife until I'm blue in the face. Instead of that I'll just tell you this; I could have paid 3 times the price I paid for this knife and I would have still considered it a bargain.

It would be nice if the Cara Cara came with the fully serrated blade.
I bought the Cara Cara FRN from a guy at a knife show who said he was the owners' son-in-law. He made custom kydex sheaths. He was a cool guy.

no real reason for this post, just wanted to finally post something.

Hi Stdlrfll,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

Scott makes our sheaths for many of the models. He also covers some of our shows. His sheaths are quite respectable and he's getting better all of the time.

Regarding the Cara Cara & teeth. We select the combinations that we feel will give good respresentation when a model is introduced. These days most prefer a combination edge on this type of knife.

The market will then choose which edge configurations or colors will follow. Thanx for your input on the teeth. I'll keep that in mind.

We're working on a Rescue blade for the Cara Cara. It will be fully serrated and there will not be a plain edge variation when the model is introduced. That's because the market that uses the Rescue style blades (sheepfoot / lambfoot) prefers fully serrated edges.
