Hello
I need some help with research - I have a Spyderco C07TI Police Model (Titanium) that I purchased in the early 1990s - NEW. I've never had it out of the original box. I recall paying approximately $350. for the knife in 1992. Do you have any idea what this knife is worth now?
it is classified as "rare / discontinued)

I think it was a part of a limited run of 500

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

Tom Begg

can you describe it more fully???blade type.blade steel etc, a picture would be great too
Phil

According to Spyderco's "Across the Years" timeline, the Titanium Police came out in 1992. It was not a "limited run" in the same sense as the "Sprint Runs" of today, but rather just a model that sold poorly - for whatever reason. Don' know if anyone will remember exactly how many were made, but I'd guess 1200 each of the plain and serrated edge versions at a minimum. Far as I know, that was the only time they were produced. Current prices, as has been noted, seem to run between $200 and $300, depending on how many (or few) people want one at a given moment, and how badly.

As for classifying something as "rare", that term has been so overused and abused by eBay sellers that it has lost all meaning - but it would definitely be classified as "discontiued" - even by me. ;) :D

Another person from the watch collecting world says "rare" is how he likes his steak. "Uncommon" is the word he prefers to use to describe the relative difficulty of obtaining a particular watch.

Thanks - I was merely using the language of Rare * Discontinued* used by a collector, that Spyderco noted on their site as being "expert".

Obviously, I'm no expert. I really appreciate your feedback & rcommendations. i was hoping you would tell me it was worth a gold mine. Ah well..... win some / lose some.

We did 2 runs of Titanium Police models. the first was a 500 pc run of a fully serrated version, made for a knife catalog company.

The 2nd run was also 500, but a combination -plain/serrated edge.

Retail at the time was $250.

The catalog company sold out fairly quickly as they offered the model for $125. This also killed the prospect of selling them at a higher price, which killed the model.

We tried the 2nd run at the "proper" retail and they would not sell due to the earlier model being offered so inexpensively. Then they were dropped.

Hi Tom, and congratulations on your fine NIB knife. They don't make such things anymore :(
I'm not sure about the Police, but a Ti Delica, with ATS-34 blade is about 150$ at hamonoichiba.com.

Sal - I think you got it! - you have been most helpful. I do have the 1/2 serrated - 1/2 plain model.

I really appreciate the history you've shared.

Thank you, Tom

Hi Guys
blades are ATS 34, I believe it was the only time Spyderco has used this steel for the Police range. The full serraated knives were made for Cutlery Shoppe.

Thanks for the info Sal. Interesting how discount pricing on a new release can have unintended consequences.

thank you. was there any distinguishing value between the full vs, 12 serrated ?
Do you mean materials and/or build quality, or current market value?

Doubt there was any difference in the former - both are Ti and ATS-34.

As for current value, as a general rule, PE is the most popular with Spyderco collectors, followed by SE, with CE the least popular of all. Naturally, as with most "rules" there are occasional exceptions. especially in cases like this where there were no PE, and an equal and relatively small number of SE and CE, made. My gut instinct tells me the SE "should" be more in demand, and thus command a premium, since there are many who feel SE is the iconic edge type for the Police. But if one of each were suddenly to appear on eBay the same day, their selling priices would probably be most influenced by which of them two or more eBayers had a burning desire to acquire at that given moment in time.

I would have loved to have picked up a Ti Police with ATS-34 fully serrated blade for 125$.
I am one of those who thinks a police should have a fully serrated edge.

It's an interesting study Paul. We've found out over the past 30 years that pricing in general and discounting in particular have enormous long term consequenses in many areas that often aren't seen for a long time.

Many are often seeking the "lowest proice" without realizing all of the "traps" that develop for both customers and makers with "low price" as the bait.
