California laws can cost the rest of us money!

Butterfly knives are legal to own in CA, just not legal to carry, manufacture, or distribute. Yes, it sucks.

That sucks.
Hopefully they can see a good profit from the florida location, and in the long run the cost will go down.

yep California's knife laws are screwing us all. Almost tempted to start writing the government there as well.

I'm all teared up. Benchmade had to move their whole kit and caboodle up to Oregon, sorry to hear CS had to open an outlet office to keep stealing their ideas.

California does seem to affect nationwide policy, thus other states, when it comes to educational and economic issues. But to complain about this great state affecting a small part of your business through the selling "butterfly" knives?

Last I understood, and which you concur, California currency is still green - I think we still have the same presidents on our bills. I don't hear anyone complain when we spend money, but when we're in a crunch, these "other" states find it ETHICAL to steal our companies while "their" energy counterparts have no ceiling when it comes to charging us. Laissez-faire, right?

Whatever. We've survived before, we'll survive again. Yes we do have some pretty lame laws but that's the compromise for being the 5th - 7th economic power of the world.

Bagging someone's state has definitely reached a new low. :barf:

Thank God most Californians are easy going.

I think all businesses should move the hell out of California to protest their anti-commerce, totalitarian stance on business regulation.

It does suck, but can you point me to a CA DOJ link stating the above. I thought butterfly knives were simply illegal to own or possess. TIA

Hopefully this link will work: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/waisgate?WAISdocID=0746424649+2+0+0&WAISaction=retrieve

CA PC 653k
Every person who possesses in the passenger's or driver's area of any motor vehicle in any public place or place open to the public, carries upon his or her person, and every person who sells, offers for sale, exposes for sale, loans, transfers, or gives to any other person a switchblade knife having a blade two or more inches in length is guilty of a misdemeanor.
For the purposes of this section, "switchblade knife" means a
knife having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a
spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife or any other
similar type knife, the blade or blades of which are two or more
inches in length and which can be released automatically by a flick
of a button, pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other
mechanical device, or is released by the weight of the blade or by
any type of mechanism whatsoever. "Switchblade knife" does not
include a knife that opens with one hand utilizing thumb pressure
applied solely to the blade of the knife or a thumb stud attached to
the blade, provided that the knife has a detent or other mechanism
that provides resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade,
or that biases the blade back toward its closed position.
For purposes of this section, "passenger's or driver's area" means
that part of a motor vehicle which is designed to carry the driver
and passengers, including any interior compartment or space therein.
It mentions where you cannot carry a "switchblade knife," and there are certain places not mentioned, including in your home and in the trunk of your car.

Case law has determined that butterfly knives are switchblades.

And, according to what it says, switchblades are not illegal to manufacture, just carry and sell.

This state needs to wake up. This State has regulations for just about everything. The latest that I just love is the enforcening smoking regulations in a bar. Smoke free zone. Umm its a bar!!!

Too bad for Cold Steel, actually for business period. Great plan make it hard for business (with permits, fees.ect...) and then wonder why they leave the state or the country for that manner.

For our self righteous folks in California don't worry they will
realize too late that the police state mentality will come back to
haunt them.I remember during the L.A. riots when the usually proud
anti-gun folks went to buy shotguns and flashlights they were
amazingly suprised that they could not buy a long gun because of
California's waiting period.Hey Wait that only applies to criminals
not to JohnQ nice guy me.SUPRISE!!!.So when California bans weapons
and the crime rate goes up they will just scratch their little
heads and wonder???

IMO, and I've lived in both states. It's getting harder to tell CA from MA. Given the opportunity I will NEVER live in either place again !! IMO socialism rules in both states and that's far from my personal beleifs.
Remember "Chappaquidic" !!
Edited to add: A great big THANK YOU to Jason for his efforts and personal appearance / testimony before the CA State Legislature that clarified and reduced restrictions on CA's knife laws. Again, Jason -- THANK YOU !!!

OK, second edit -- to be fair, I was born in MA, left when I was 14 and haven't been back !! I'm 60 and am still smilin' -- proud of my heritage, but ashamed of what the do-gooders have done. My home is now in AZ as it has been since '56. I'll never return to my old home state, not even with my kids to show them the old family farm, etc., because of the stupid laws that have been enacted there. Thanks, MA voters for your dedication to the Constitution and Bill of Rights -- your ignorance has screwed up what once was a beautiful and free place, looks like the values of "the embattled farmers" at the bridge in Lexington have been lost. My kids will never see the statue of Captain Parker or Fanuel Hall because of your rejection of common sense. Our founding fathers are doing 3500 RPMs in their caskets because of your stupidity. I take NO pride in saying I'm from MA.
My apologies to to the rest of the forum members -- I just couldn't take the BS any more !!

"Last I understood, and which you concur, California currency is still green"

On the surface yes... but if you look a little harder its RED! They might as well call California... The People's Republic Of California. Yes, we're still a state... you wouldn't know it walkin around some towns. I'm in no way racist, but with the growing population of millions of illegal aliens, in many places, CA looks like Mexico. Everything here is in English and Spanish. Too many can't speak English here... its slowly turning into a different country. Some places here even have the Spanish FIRST, then the English.
There are so many restrictive weapons laws we're halfway to Europe over here. I was looking at a state comparison knife laws chart... many states had a couple simple bulleted restrictions... go to California... it turns into a book. With idiots like Gray Out Davis in office things continue to get worse. Here the state spends millions on anti gun billboards and ads as well as anti smoking ads. This is where the money goes?

California is one of the places you get thrown in jail for defending yourself and family with rational force.

I live in California and love many of the rural communities here; there are some great people and beautiful places here... but the anti second amendment socialist liberals in office here continue to make silly, redundant, unconstitutional laws and it ends up affecting the rest of the US.

Amen brother... and sorry to here you live in this shithole too:(

Thanks man. Fresno? I'm about an hour n a few mins away! Go to Fresno lots... I feel VERY bad for you!!! I live in the mountains, pop of Three Rivers is 2,000. Quiet, Clean and until recently... crime free. Its been determined the person/people who started BREAKING IN and ROBBING homes here are into Drugs... homes within 100 yards of my house!!! Before a couple months ago, no robbery in 20 years. Damn drug loving, easy on crime liberals.

California is TOO FAR gone to save!!! Let's take Disneyland and then nuke the place!

E-mail me sometime, if you want to play with some knives and have a cold one let me know. I should have a month before my enlistment if all goes well.

I congratulate you on your enlistment and thank you for it. Just another thing the Starbucks Liberals don't truly understand... freedom isn't free.

I'll be in the service with ya as soon as I'm out of school.
E-mail sent bro.

Rangers Lead The Way!!!

The CA State Assembly probably feared that if they didn't outlaw Balisong knives, all of the Asians in Chinatown would be kungfu-ing it up with Balis and scare away the tourist trade. Hoo-Hah!

Starbucks Liberals
LMFAO :D

I know them well. I go to Starbuck's on a daily basis and I only spot about 3 knife wearers a week, besides my friends.
Survival tip: When in a land of liberals, surround yourself with un-PC things... only way to stay sane. :p
