Hi all you educated Holt fans. This just landed today off our wonderful BF exchange. I'm inclined to believe it's GTG, but prefer to educate myself as much as possible. I'm a self-proclaimed CRK expert, but no nothing of this brand. I just really liked the lines, so I snagged it.

What are some of the ways I can confirm this is genuine?

I understand it to be a Holt Morpheus.

Thanks in advance

That is a Morpheus, don't see any immediate red flags. New Holts come with a Selinko NFC authentication card...you download their app, scan it with your phone (same as using tap-to-pay), and it will give you the serial number and relevant build details. Is it safe to assume you didn't receive this with your purchase?

It came with. Very cool little card. Since I will quite possibly be buying more holts, can you give me examples of red flags?

I'm not familiar enough with the counterfeits to know all the details they lack, but all the markings, milling, hardware, internals, etc. on yours looked legit to my eye. The only thing I'm aware of, and this may not still be the case, but just about all of the Holt clones used to have a standard ball detent, not the adjustable strength flat detent that Holt is known for. As with many other counterfeits, they often use D2 or K110 steels and I don't believe Holt has ever used either of those.

Beyond that you just have to trust your gut. I wouldn't buy a knife that I had questions about from someone with no feedback/reputation if they didn't have the Selinko. That is your verification that it is legit. Download the app, scan the card, and you'll get something like this:

Unless that card is embedded in the knife, it's still not really a foolproof way to tell.
Yes, that's a good point. As a CRK collector, same goes for the box and birth card. I could throw a brownie in the box .. that doesn't make it a Zaan. :)

Was just mentioning to another member, that's sometimes a challenging game to play when you have a sizeable collection: "which box is did you come from?"

But, yeah, it's definitely a helpful reference, but not foolproof

It's not foolproof but pretty close. If a scammer did happen to have a legitimate Selinko card they intended to sell with a fake knife, they'd have to track down or create a clone that matched each detail...serial number, spacer/clip/handle milling and ano, and blade steel and finish. Seems like more work than someone who scams the knife community would put into it and many of the clones come in a single config which is usually fairly plain jane. Why wouldn't they just say they lost the card?

As with anything else, someone could go to great lengths to convince a potential buyer that a fake was real, but I haven't seen that level of determination from a scammer yet. Usually when you ask a question that's hard to answer they just block you or get angry.
