Camco knives?

I found a knife at an estate sale(Sadly no camera, so excuse me if I give a lack of info.).

It is labeled Camco, and underneathe it says U.S.A

It is kinda like a swiss army knife, except it has only a pen knife blade, and a long screwdriver that actually has a liner lock, I found it quite interesting because I've never seen that before.

On the back is simply reads 229...

Well, I am certainly not an expert when it comes down to old knives, so any help would be appreciated, I'll get pics if I can get someone to lend me a good camera.

Thank you,

Sal

Sal,

Welcome :)

The knife you have was made by Camillus way back in the good ole days and I have owned and carried them for many years. They are good honest pocket knives made by some of the best cutlers of they're time. Its hard to give you any additional facts unless you provide some photographs.

Best,

Anthony

Hi,

Wow that's interesting. I always thought Camco was Camillus' inexpensive China made knives. I've got a Camco Peanut that is marked PRC. What time frame were Camcos US made?

Please help us out with a pic as I have never heard of this knife before!

YES the name (camco) was sold and is now being used as a nostialga/------- and are now stamped PRC (peoples Republic of China):barf:

SORRY as Camillus goes so do the names and as Schrade goes BLAH blah blah:grumpy:!

Hi,

here are some quick photos of my PRC Camco. Brown micarta scales with what looks to be copper wire embedded into them as high lights. And the shield says Workhorse. The clip blade has an etching of a man behind a plow pulled by a horse team.

Over all, I'd say the fit and finish is as good as the best of Rough Rider. I did pick it up off of eBay. The seller claimed it was made for Camillus in China just prior to them folding. In my newbie-ness, I accepted that tale, (rightly or wrongly:)). The price was more than right, and I liked the micarta scales.

Hey dalle, not to worry.I was only joking.Sorry to use you as the brunt of it. I just couldn't resist. The actual knife pics didn't come out too bad. There are some instructions here, I think on levines forum on how to take pictures. It's not easy with a shiney object.I thought the use of a magnifier was pretty ingenious.

I have three:
A trapper, a stockman, and a "Texas" Jack, all PRC
Well made, with a good F&F.
The scales are micarta layered with copper for a very attractive finish

Better than Rough Rider

I have a Camco congress and a trapper in the micarta and I like them both. Also got a Camco Canoe with the red bone. Good knives for the price. They are better quality than I expected when I bought them on the net. Looking for another Canoe in the micarta. The black micarta is a very nice looking with the copper mixed into it.

Hi,

I know you were joking and I'm not upset so don't worry. I'm sorry if I sounded that way.:). It's just a juice glass mark on the top of an old dead computer box. A calling card from my oldest Grandson. He's 3. I did mean to edit that part out though.

I started using the magnifier to take pictures of very small and poorly formed stamped marking on military surplus rifles. They can be not only poorly struck, but sometimes over-struck and partially ground. Even under the best conditions, they are a bear to pick up. And like me, my camera is old and probably doesn't see too well anymore either.:D So we need help.

Here's a link to the Camillus forum. There will be lots of info buried in there on these.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=695

The SMKW website says this about the Camco's: "Camillus Cutlery's last-ditch effort to save their position in the cutlery industry involved developing an import line of quality knives at an affordable price, resulting in the creation of the Camco brand."

thx - cpr
