They were having a Buck Barlow thread in the Buck forum and reading it, I wrote this up sort of as a catch-all and end-all to that and all Buck Barlow discussions. I wrote this up and posted it in the Buck Sunday Photo thread today.
Listen guys your not going to hurt my feelings to call me a blow-hard lie teller. I would like to change this a little and put it in the Buck Collectors Club newsletter if at least most of it is true..... Have a look and call me names, at least we will get it written down so I maybe I can cut down on answering the same Barlow questions on the Buck forum over and over. If I get any SMKWs catalog information I will add it at the correct spot.

Well, a bunch of you guys were discussing Buck 'Barlows' and it put me to scratching my head a little. A good spell back, over in the Camillus Collectors forum our Matt J. was discussing a big Buck barlow with the Camillus experts. The discussion was all over the board but lets see how you folks feel about some of that information and some regular Buck barlow talk.
SMKW's offered Buck stamped large and small barlows in 1999. I believe they were made on special order by Camillus for SMKW's. Chuck Reed is checking his extensive SMKW's catalog collection to see if he can find a picture and advertisement I will include it at bottom if it is found.
Camillus has a long history in the production of theirs and others barlows matching the ones they made with the Buck name on them. I easily found where they were offered in the early 40's. Camillus liked to call the big barlow "Daddy" barlows instead of "Granddaddy's".
The Camillus factory pattern number that matches the Buck stamped small barlow is #5541, but catalogs will list them as Models 10, 11, 51 and Camco 551. The 'Daddy' barlow is patteren #599 and all fall under Model 9.
The Buck records call the small version Model 332 and the large version as Model 331. But, confusion occurs on why this was not stamped on the Buck versions tangs. Camillus often reused blades left over from other runs but would usually just acid etch the tang markings after sanding off the original stamping. As you can see the Buck tangs are stamped. Buck shields were also used in the scales but Camillus likely had a supply of them from the past.
With the current information I cannot say which came first the black scale or the yellow. All of the Buck stamped barlows were sold by SMKW's and none sold by Buck from the factory. Both scale colors are sawcut Delrin and stamped and ground alike. The difference in yellow scale shades is common and I have never seen a large barlow with the smallers bright yellow tint.
In Matt J's discussion with the Camillus experts the conflict mainly centered around a third version of the Granddaddy Buck barlow which had jigged bone scales. These can be found also. But, Matt had one marked 'Prototype' and the blade was marked with Remington info stamped on the reverse side. The discussion leveled off with the concept that the etched 'Prototype' is not the way Camillus would have done it but the rest of the knife appeared to be a "Proto". Since this knife was being pieced together by Camillus with Remington parts, I believe the prototype etch occurred at the Buck factory or by SMKWs which had the ability to do the same just to keep track of the knife sent in by Camillus for their approvals.
This is the Camillus made Remington knife whose left-over parts made up the proto Buck Granddaddy Jigged Bone barlow.
This is the front of the jigged bone version. As stated these were offered by SMKWs and can occasionally be found.
And this is the much discussed prototype etching on the reverse, as you can see it was a blade originally made for a Remington Barlow.
So, here we are. Maybe someone who wants to know about Buck Barlows in the future will actually do a Buck Forum SEARCH for them. I likely should have posted in a new thread but I haven't done anything for the Sunday Show in a good while and knew most of you would read this thread first anyway. Lets not clutter up the Sunday Show If you want to discuss this more first let me know and I will move it to it's own thread.
