i'm 13 and my friend's dad who is a cop asked me what my edc was and i pulled out my bear and son balisong and he told me it was illegal to carry it. is that true? i bought it at wholesale sports in vancouver, so i know they must be legal to own.

thanks

The governor is about to sign a law modifying the code. It's a little confusing, but as far as I can see not only are Balisongs still illegal, but ANY knife that can be opened with a flick of the wrist is illegal. There has to be something holding the blade in the handle so that it has to be extracted by hand, as opposed to having it go to the open position without pushing it.
A nice smooth linerlock IS legal because you start opening it with thumb or finger power.
The new bill is being hailed as a huge step for knife rights, what it actually is is a convenience for manufacturers pursuing government contracts- not a bad thing, don't get me wrong, but it means little to regular folks.
One good thing is that it does clarify that a lot of quick opening knives ARE legal.
It's baffling, though- I can open a good flipper as easily as a "switchblade". Why didn't the knife rights groups take up this issue, that the whole thing is silly?

@elementfe: so my kershaw scallion with a broken spring assist mechanism is illegal? that thing opens when i pull out of my pocket! lol jk

The answer to that is yes. If the knife falls open by gravity and locks, or can be flicked open (in any way with any crazy amount of force by the officer) you can be charged as if it was a switchblade.

Silly as it is, butterfly knives are considered equal to switchblades in WA. They (according to my reading of the statute) are illegal to carry and illegal to even own.
