A short time ago,i bought a nice knife.. I use it often and are very happy with it. But i think it's to flashy and blinky... so im wondering..Can you paint a knife?? And how do i do it?? Greetz AtmozFearz

Sure you can. The best product is probably Duracoat which is a two part mixture needs to be sprayed on (or should be). Duracoat is very popular with the gun crowd so it comes in black, olive drab, ACU gray, coyote brown, a kind of faux parkerized color, as well as orange and pink and all kinds of stuff.

I have seen guns Duracoated and they were great. Adheres to plastic and steel. Careful prep is important. Wash and scrub in very hot water first and then use acetone (depending on the various finishes that may be on there already...if you care) or alcohol.

Probably just plain Rustoleum would work well enough.

I sure hop you're not fixing to paint a Sebenza or a Hinderer or a Loveless  or anything like that! Other than that though, go for it.

Any kind of paint will get scratched up and ugly pretty quickly from what ive seen.

And, your prep work is key. You will need to "scuff" it a bit, like a green scrub pad, at least for car paint, to get anything to stick.
I'm saying that you will be making a decision that you may not be able to get the knife back to "original".
So, I don't know the knife, but I'd either strip it down to metal, then either use it that way, or use the duracoat.
You don't want the paint to be thick, the knife won't cut as well, and it's gonna wear off eventually.

It would help to know which knife also. G-10 can dyed. I've seen knives dura-coated that were really nice. Various epoxy paints work ok on blades. You could maybe bead-blast it.

Lots of options depending on the type of knife.

Duracoat is good but you will need an airbrush kit.

GunKote is easier to use as it comes in spray cans.

The easiest method however is to cold-blue the knife. As long as it isn't stainless steel, any carbon steel can be cold-blued with Birchwood Casey cold blue or better yet, Brownells Oxpho Blue. Cold bluing can be applied with a cotton rag directly to clean steel. Worn areas and scratches can be easily touched-up with more bluing and a rag.

You can use paint, but it will scratch and come off fairly easy. If its stainless then don't even bother with paint, it will come right off. KG Guncoat or Teflon coat would be better. You can buy spray cans from Brownells and do it yourself.

If you want to go for some more expense Duracoat or Ceracoat will do a much better job, but may be overkill. This is tougher to use, but will give a better finish.

Sure, just grab yourself a can of your favourite spray paint and give 'er. Then you can make your knife any one of a multitude of designer colours.

If you actually use the knife, then I'd not recommend trying to paint it. Any coating will get scratched as a knife gets used.

Which is why cold bluing may make the most sense. Any scratches or marks can be reblued using just a cotton rag.

Hmm,thanks for the all the info.... It's nice to have guys around that really know something!! But...after all the info i've come to a conclusion that it's useless to paint my knife. It's a 420 STAINLESS..... so there's no other option! But thanks for all the great info guys!! Greetz AtmozFearz

you can use a sharpie & it can be touched up as often as you like. i agree with knarfeng about paint scratching. methyl ethyl ketone removes sharpie immediately.--dennis
