Like the title says can anyone tell me anything about Bob Dozier ? Someone mentioned his neck knife the other day so I checked it out at Knifeart and loved it. Here are some questions:
  1. How are his knives regarded by fellow members ?
  2. Are the knives he makes considered customs or what ?
  3. What is D2 like ?
  4. Are his knives good, coz they sure look it ?
    [/list=a]

    Any reponses greatly appreciated.

Check out A.G. Russells Site for a little information, and Bob Doziers Site quotes Mr. Russel and list more of his products.

I believe his work falls into the Hand Made category, but I am not sure what the exact process is or if it is within the Guild Guidelines that define a Custom Made Knife.

I have found the D2 steel to be tough and to have excellent edge holding capabilities, with no oxidation problems thus far.

His knives are great, and a bargain. Fit and finish is top notch, they come razor sharp, and are both useful and attractive.

JD, Great knives, great prices, nice sheath and carry options. I'm not a "Tactical" kind of guy, but I do see an AG Russell NY Special in my future. Bob's knives have a real nice contour and feel to them, (I've handled them several times at knife shows). Take a look at the AG Russell Exclusives, that's a collaboration you can really count on.

I have 3: Pro Guide, White River Skinner & Arkansas Toothpick. They're all keepers & a bargain at the price.

D-2 is considered a tool steel & is excellent at edge retention. Although it is "stainless", it is barely so & should be treated with a product such as Tuf-Cloth. FWIW, I have a few other D-2 blades, in addition to the Doziers, & have never experienced an oxidation problem with any of them.

Bob Dozier is highly regarded by most of the BF members I've spoken with. He is known for excellent grinds, great prices, and really, really good kydex sheaths. I myself have owned three of his knives, although I have recently sold them to make way for other customs. D2 steel is awesome, and one of my favorites. The reasons I sold my Doziers are as follows: they are heavy. Bob does not do any relief cutting of the tang before he applies the scales, such as cutting holes in the tang or tapering it. This makes the knives just a bit cumbersome. Also, his finish is not as smooth as I like to see. In other words, his knives seem to be finished with a rather coarse grit, as you can easily see the striations in the steel. Last, his micarta scales are smooth, and while they are definately fit and finished perfectly, my hunting knives are usually bloody when used, and smooth micarta becomes a bear to hang onto when bloody. Please understand that Bob's knives are a steal for the price, and of excellent quality. My reasons are nit-picky, and if I had more money I would have kept my Doziers AND bought the knives I replaced them with. However, for me it was an either/or choice. Do I recommend Dozier's? Absolutely. It just depends on EXACTLY what you're looking for.

I have one of the little neck knives you were asking about- it's a super little cutter- D2 is a good knife steel & Dozier does it right. The handle slabs on mine are textured G10, so there's plenty of purchase to the grip. I've been really pleased with mine- it's more of a small utility knife (IMHO) & I bought it with that use in mind- but I also know that it will slash like the devil if that need ever arise (hopefully not).

I have a Dozier Pro Guide I've used on a few camping trips. Cutting rope, whittling, cutting hotdog and marshmallow sticks for the kids, general food prep, etc. is all I've used it for so far. D2 seems to hold an edge well, better I think than VG10 or ATS-34 in my very unscientific comparisons. If I recall, Bob Dozier's knives are advertised as working knives so don't expect a highly polished blade, etc. I like to use all my knives so I tend to like basic shapes and styles with little ornamentation. The Kydex sheath seems well made. My only gripe is that I would like to see sheaths that can be taken apart for cleaning. It is tough to get pieces of potato and carrot out of the sheath after the Scouts have finished borrowing the knife! While I hear D2 is "semi-stainless" I still chose to treat the blade to prevent corrosion.

Bob is a great guy to deal with. As has been mentioned already, his knives are a steal. He's a seasoned maker at the top of his game. Great cutting tools, very well made.

I have one of Dozier's neck knives and I have to agree with Rugger. It's a great little knife. I have used mine for cutting up heavy cardboard boxes and I have lost count of how many I have cut up. I still have not had to sharpen it.

The finish on the blade is kind of coarse, but what would you expect for less then $100?

I like it so much that I've been thinking of having Bob make me another one modified into a sheepsfoot shape.

I think Bob's knives are top notch! I've used one of his Yukon Pro Skinners for several years, and I just love it. Like all of Bob's knives, it's built to use, and use hard! Excellent blade grinds... superb steel... very sharp... very easy to resharpen... awesome sheaths... among the very best values in hand made knives anywhere, IMHO.

I have the neck knife that you mention, and it's one of my favorites. I've been wearing it while I exercise, and in spite of sweating all over it, it hasn't shown the slightest signs of rust. (I do treat it with tuff-cloth)

I also use one of his aluminium handle folders as daily carry, and love that one too. (PTPALPHA- this ones the exception, it's
a real featherweight!)

IMO he's the best maker of real working customs out there.

I've only heard great things about Bob's folders. Even some folks I've talked to who don't like his fixed blades LOVE his folders.

I have been eyeing some of his folders as well, I like the looks of the Integral Lock folders that Patrich has listed at Triple Aught.

I'm definately gonna look into the neck knife and maybe the toothpick as well. I might try Knifeart as their page says they ship to UK. I might wait till later in the year though. Do you think there will be any of his knives available at the Blade Show ?

How exactly do you look after the D2 ? Do you just need to wipe it down with Tuff cloth ? If so, how often do you need to do this ?

Thanks for the replies

Hello,

Just wanted to offer another thums-up to Bob Dozier. Previous posts seem to say it all...Great knives, great prices. I've got a Pro Guide's knife and love it.

The nature of D2 does not lend itself to a mirror finish. When highly polished the surface of D2 develops a texture that resembles the skin of an orange. Some of the Pro Guide's surfaces that are polished a bit do show this tendancy. I personally find it attractive but I believe most would not so that is why D2 blades usually come with a rougher finish.

Later,

MBS

Llamedos,
I've seen Bob at a few shows & he always had plenty to sell. Naturally, if you have a particular model in mind, it's best to stop by his table early in the show for the best selection.
As to maintaining D-2, an occasional wipe with a Tuf-Cloth s/b all that is needed.

Hi...

I've seen several od Dozier's blades.Have only worked with one though..

What I can tell you from the one I worked with is that it is a for sure a high quality knife.

The knife was the Dozier Toothpick,, and I was Very impressed with the quality of Micarta Inlay on the scales.

I would buy one of these myself...

Is anybody familiar with that carrying harness Bob invented for the N. Y. Special? It can be seen at A. G. Russel's...

Also, any suggestions on how to roughen up the micarta scales? I'm talking about a possible domestic solution.

JD,

Dozier's "straight personal" is what got me into fixed blades. Great ergonomic, sure grip handle. D2 blade with razor sharp, perfect grind and it cuts and cuts and cuts...

No problem with rust. I use then rinse and/or wipe dry. When I store away, I do a wipe with Tuff cloth.

The cross draw sheath nicely made and very good for that specific carry. I wouldn't mind a multicarry system though...

Overall, a great knife, a good sheath and very fair price.
