i've been trying to find the small boxes of matches. no gas stations carry matches other than the books, and i've found that only 7-11 carries them (for free). i've tried meijer, walmart, walgreens. i'm thinking that either rei, or dicks would have them. although they would probably be strike anywhere or wind resistant and i don't need that. i've also tried many other smaller scale convenience stores. anyone know where to find the small boxes?

thank you,
nick

I had to buy good old matches via the internet.

Later I found out the local cigar/tobacco shop had them.

A very good question. What happened to boxes of matches? Did they suddenly become politically incorrect or something?
They used to be on sale everywhere, now you have t go to specialist stores to buy them, if you can find a store that stocks them at all.
Gentlemen of a certain age will recall often whittling a wooden matchstick to toothpick size with the trusty stockman knife that everyone once carried in their pocket.

I haven't even considered buying wooden matches for quite a while. It seems like I've seen them in the grocery stores though. Also in the camping section of big box department stores. Now you have me curious.

It has been a while, but I found the small size strike anywhere matches at REI. I don't remember, but they may have had the larger ones also.

Grocery stores in the picnic section sometimes. Some stores that sell gas fireplaces.
Found strike anywhere matches(diamond brand) at a (real) old style hardware store several years ago.
You really got to look. The nanny state thinks they are too dangerous for everyday citizens. You must be protected from your self. May be not enough room on the box to print all the required safety warnings.

i ended up going to rei and getting 10 boxes of 30-something strike anywhere for 1.25. it's kind of sad that it's become this hard to find wooden matches these days. i do have a question about strike anywhere matches. what kind of surfaces can you actually light them on? i tried my coat (carhartt, fairly rough), jeans, thumb nail. anyone have experience with these? i remember a spaghetti western where the guy kind of picked at it with his nail (which i tried).

I'm surprised you couldn't get one to light with a thumbnail flick.

I also used to light them on leather shoe soles, metal watchbands, new denim pants, my front teeth, etc.

My Gramps could light them on the callouses of his hands.

BTW - When lighting them there is usually some hot residual, so be careful.

It seems to me that the current strike anywhere matches are not as good as the ones that I remember from my (slightly misguided) youth. The white part of the tips seem to break of much easier and they are more "picky" about what kind of surface is needed to get them to light.

match heads are a major ingredient in the production of meth

 No more over the counter allergy meds (at least the ones I use) and now restrictions on matches? ..... It even takes a doctors prescription for me to get needles for allergy shots ....

What's next ... water ... gas ... rant off ... :)
