canteen cup twig stove

lately I have been thinking of putting together a simple canteen, cup, and stove for day hikes and such. Just enough to make some coffee or a simple hot snack. I usually have a tin cup and a esbit pocket stove for this but a cup, stove and water bottle that nestted together would be nice.

i have been looking at the CanteenShop products and think they would work well. what I am wondering is if I could use their stove stand as a twig stove after a few mods. if I drilled a few holes in the open end of the stove I could insert some wire crossbars to support the cup and then build the fire inside the stove stand with the closed end at the bottom. i would also have to work out how to raise it a bit off the ground for better air flow.

Any thoughts? has anyone else tried this? it looks like the round water bottle stove stand would work better as the openings look bigger for adding twiggs.

Thanks

Yup - I bought one a while back. It works great as is. Build a small fire and get some good coals going, and then place the grill over it, and you can keep feeding it pretty easily.

I use a surplus Swiss Ranger stove for my car kit... I opened the original small fuel feed hole to accept a Sterno can (newer smaller cans would fit without modification... kit was new old stock, and included a spun aluminum water bottle and cork stopper that fit inside the stove, and cup is placed upside down and locks together

i like that swiss ranger kit. looks like a good set up.

glad to see the Canteen Shop stove is working well as designed. most of the videos i found had people either using the stove stand with an alcohal stove or making a larger fire ang setting the stand in the fire. All of which are usefull applications. the main questions i had were how easy was it to feed it when using it as designed and how feesible it might be to use it more like the GI type two stove stand. most of the time i think i would use it like smithhammer but sometimes in areas with fire restriction i think i would be better off with the fire more contained. just less likely to be questioned.

hammer are you using a stainless GI cup or an alum? about how long does it take to bring it to a boil with out a lid?

Thanks and great photos

for a self-contained fire, did you consider an emberlit? it won't nest with the cup/canteen but since it folds flat, i doubt you'd notice the space it takes up.

It's the stainless cup. Without a lid (which I need to get...) it seems to take around 4-6 minutes to get a boil going.

But I would agree with JV3 - have you checked out the Emberlit? While the canteen grill is cool and useful for what it is, the Emberlit is much more versatile and capable imo.

i do like the emberlit and several of the other true twig stoves.

I have had this one for about twenty years. It was a gift and more of a novelty. it works well and is sturdy but heavy.

In the end I will get an emberlit or similar.

I want to like the Canteen Shop stand stove. I just have not convinced myself that it will be that much eaiser than finding three rocks to set my cup on over a small fire like I do now.
