Now that I know there are two different types, is there really any difference? (Sorry if this is an old topic) I have read that people prefer the canvas micarta over the linen.

What is YOUR preference?

Thanks-
TGR

I haven't got to handle any canvas micarta that ESEE puts out, but the linen micarta seems to be a bit smoother and perhaps a little less "grippy" than the canvas.

Looking @ the canvas it does look a bit more "grippy". Its to bad that all the handles are custom fit to each knife. It would be nice if they were available for purchase. That just threw my whole ESEE knife purchases for a loop. Was thinking about the 6 but if the 5 has better handles I think I'm going to go with that one. AHHH there goes like 2 months of convincing myself to get the 6.

HELP

the canvas is alittle rougher, but having held both the 5 and used the 6, its not like there isn't enough grip on the 6. there really is very little working differance in the two.

take it easy

Welll...... Let this twist your head for a second....

In functional use... I don't think I could tell you the difference.

The handle scales would not be sufficient to make me go 5 over the six.

There's a LOT more difference in the 5 and the 6 than the handle material.
You had better get one of each in your hands, somehow, before you make a decision based on the handle material alone.
Especially since you're basing things on "looks".....if finished the same way, burlap can feel the same as linen Micarta, but they will "look" like what they are.

Better do some homework before you buy.

Trust me I have done my homework.......Like 6months worth. This was the last hurdle aside from the money. If there is no real difference in the handles, For what I do the 6 is my knife. I not the biggest guy (5'8" on a good day) so I think the 5 is just to big.

Ok, thanks fellas! Started to think that ESEE is definitely not the kind of company to put out two types of handles that are hugely different and not make note of it.

:grumpy:
I HATE YOU....

:p. Just meaning to show the handles. While it's not recommended to swap them, I haven't had too much trouble moving them around. It's not as good a fit, but it isn't bad at all. Issue is just finding someone to swap with if that's what you really want.

Im joking as well, its just that you collection is.... discouraging haha I saw that you have the 5 scales on your 6. When you say the fit isnt as good its not terrible right? Any chance I can get a pic of the fit?

The difference in grip between canvas and linen Micarta is not very pronounced in a flat-sided scale like ESEE makes. The main difference is appearance, but they'll both absorb water and oils and darken a bit. Paper micarta is a completely different animal; it's less grippy, and considerably less shock-resistant. I've seen several paper Micarta handles that chipped like bone.

Interestingly, from what I've read, canvas Micarta is more popular in the U.S., while linen is more popular in the U.K. As to why, your guess is as good as mine.

I'll get a fit photo today for ya. It's not terrible. If you take the time to like them up right it's barely noticeable. It just isn't as tight.

Here's a bit of the linen on the 5.

i personally like canvas better as it is grippier but if you take some rough sandpaper to linen it helps a lot
