Hi all - headed to South Africa in a few weeks and just wondering if any South Africans on here can provide a quick overview on the knife carry laws? Googled but couldn't find anything current or too reliable.

More specifically I will be in Cape Town and in Kruger.

I'm most concerned with fixed blade laws (max length & concealed vs. open carry) as I'm most likely to carry one over a folder (with that said, if I carry a folder it will be an Emerson mini cqc7)....

Thanks in advance for your help!

You'll be fine with a CQC-7. Pretty much anything goes here but common sense obviously helps.

Just don't draw attention to yourself and you'll be fine.

On a side note, don't flash expensive equipment when you're on the street, keep your eyes open and don't ride in any mini-bus taxis and you should be cool.

But then you're from NYC so I'm sure you're street wise already. ;)

When I was down in Cape Town I carried my full kit. Didn't really bother to find out about the law, but of course smart guys do that.

In retrospect, I'd really like to know wht the law says. And whether they enforce the law to the full in case of self defense.

They used to be pretty liberal and then they introduced the Firearms Control Act which pretty much screwed the whole industry overnight. There are still millions of firearms in circulation but it has become very difficult to get a licence.

Everyone with an existing firearm had to reapply for their licences, after taking a competency test to prove you were familiar with the new law.

But there are so many applications being processed, it is taking years to get through them all.

I sold most of mine and just kept the Colt series 70, mostly because I'd spent so much cash pimping it. :D

Just curious, what are the laws regarding guns down there?

Regards,
C.

Our knife laws are pretty simple. You can carry any folder not exceeding 10cm blade length.

It is all in the Dangerous Weapons Act. of 1968 but the revised one has not changed a thing since 1996. Daggers and swords are concerned as a weapon. Fixed blade knives are carried either concealed or open. The Act does not stipulate anything of the matter, however I recommend you do carry it with your shirt hanging over. I would recommend that you carry the CQC in the city clipped (no law on that) fixed blade might just draw attention from sheeple. Take the fixed blade with you for the Kruger though. The game rangers and as whiny as the people in Cape Town when it comes to knifes. In fact, they would probable exchange stories on knives.

What fixed blade do you intend to carry?

Send me a pm with your email and I will attach the Act for you.

Hope I can help in any way.

Our gun laws are a bit hectic! One firearm for self defence like a 9mm, 38 special, .357 etc, You have to apply for a competence certificate every 5 years where you write an exam on the law and have to shoot target. Then you apply for a license once. But the waiting period is 3 years (that is what the officer told me for my license on a 38 special snub.

You can apply for rifles, but you have to hunt or do sport. That you can have more than one.

With both cases you have to write motivations for why you want a rifle or firearm. If you were involved in a shooting hijacking etc you can give case numbers as motivation also. Mine was almost 20 pages long!

There is no law on concealed etc when comes to firearm. Just public spaces (malls etc) have the right to not let you enter when having one.

Note. This is my interpretation to the law. I am not a lawyer.

Hey all - thank you so much for the information - good to know that concealed fixed blade (or folder) carry will be a non issue.

@ marthinus : I would love to bring a few of my smaller Busses but I'm too afraid of the airline handlers swiping them - so I will bring my Rat Cutlery RC-3 (or maybe 4? :D) for my EDC bag and Kruger and either my RC Izula or Bark River Mini Canadian for pocket/belt carry under my shirt and my mini CQC7, as you recommend, clipped for daily tasks. My trusty SAK Farmer will come as well for those touchy moments. Deciding on which lights to bring (my other hobby) is going to be even harder!

How will you get your knives down there?

I have a standard routine: they will go checked - smaller knives inside my hiking boots and larger with my other camping stuff - I feel this makes it obvious to customs that we are going camping/hiking and that is what the knives are for - I also include a note with the knives that they have been photographed and are legal under law - I usually include a copy of the carry statute for the state/country I travel to (@marthinus PM is coming your way - thank you! ;)) and for New York. Only had a letherman swiped over the years.

Hi Harry I sent you a PM........:)

Thank you so much for the PM - email sent :D

Thanks for the advice on the mini-bus taxis - what is the deal with them?

I think my SAK or CQC will see the most use - it will be nice to know that I have a bigger blade in my bag. And I totally agree - a little common sense really goes a LONG way.

With that said, I usually wear a Rolex Submariner everywhere I go (including other countries) - do you think this would definitely attract attention in Cape Town or should it be fine? I know, I know - if you have to ask... but...

Thank you also for the advice and info - see above for my choice in knives.

I will shoot you a PM with my email as it would be great to keep a copy of the act with me just in case - thank you very much!

Thanks for the advice on the mini-bus taxis - what is the deal with them?

1. The average taxi driver would make Michael Schumacher die of fear.

2. Most criminals use taxis ( bit of a generalisation i know ,but it is true. The most likely way to encounter one is to ride a taxi)

3. They are more often than not EXTREMELY OVERLOADED.

4. THEY SMELL BAD

5. A LOT of accidents are involved or caused by it

read this article in the LA times , it should give you an idea of what im talking about...
