Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone here carries folders in the open position in a sheath.
I've been looking for a fixed blade to carry iwb as a self defense tool.
Then the I got the idea, why can't i just have a sheath made for my socom or lcc in the open position?
We all know it's easier to draw a knife from a sheath than drawing a folder then fumbling to open it.
Has anyone done this? What should I be conscerned with if carrying a folder like this?
let me know what you guys think.

Hi Knife... I'm a little confused here.

Don't you defeat the purpose of a folder if you carry it open? Also, if you want to carry a knife open in a sheath, then why not a fixed blade? I think what you need is a fixed blade that folds!

Just polking a little fun.

But seriously, can you explain why you would want to carry a folder open?

CRKT already solved this problem for me. Love my big Crawford Kasper folder, but a bit too big for the pocket and clumsy out of a pouch. Picked up a Polkowski Kasper this morning. Same blade but "fixed" with same feel but about an inch shorter. Came with combo sheaths for belt or neck use, left or right side for under $35!!

Certain locales/ laws determine which type of blades one may possess/ carry. In some cases fix blades may be prohibited. A folder in its locked open position held in a sheath makes good sense. Providing one is efficient in its drawing technique, it is every bit as fast if not faster to deploy than a folder carried clipped onto a pocket.

In my carry rotation, I have a Spyderco Delica in its locked open position housed in a Mike Sastre/ River City concealex neck sheath. Its combination is light, functional, relatively inexpensive, and dual purpose carry capable. When arriving at the shop on my bike, I change into my work attire and simply pull the Delica from its neck sheath and carry it folded in my pants pocket. Works quite well. Mike will even make a sheath that has a removeable belt clip for additional carry modes. Or simply order one of his standard belt sheaths for folders in the locked open position. You could probably loop a ball chain or cord right thru its top most rivets for instant neck carry. Give Mike a try. You won' t be disappointed.

I was playing with the idea because I don't have moeny for any good fixed blades right now.
A folder is great, but it's more difficult to pull one from a clipped position in your pocket and open it than it is to just lift your shirt and yank it out already open.

I didn't know that model came out already, thought it was still a prototype.
Where did you get it?
Does it come with a sheath that you can wear inside your waist?

James Keating is the first person, that I know of, that started the ball rolling on doing this.

He advocated the Gerber Applegate/Fairbairn be carried in this manner if you chose to have Kydex made for it. Likewise, his MOD Hornet can be had with a Kydex, in the open position carry...

Ernest Emerson has Kydex Sheaths for Commanders, etc., that allow the folder to carried closed or open in a shoulder rig as well.

Cool, so i'm not just someone everyone thinks is crazy for wanting to carry a knife in a maner it wasnt specifically designed for.
Glad to know some professionals do it.

now if i can find someone to make a sheath...i've only got 20 bucks...

15 or more years ago the Gerber Parabellum folding knife came with a sheath so you could carry it open or closed. It was a pretty large folder.

Actually, a growing number of people are opting to carry this way as I've done a bunch of these for Spydercos, MODs, Microtechs, Benchmades, a Sebenza or two, and I don't remember what else. One nationally noted trainer advocates this carry in his LE Handgun Retention Courses under the theory that while one side of your body is using gross motor skills (hanging onto handgun and perp's limb), it is a bit much to have your offside hand involved in fine motor skills (one handed opening of folder from pocket). He advocates a thin, lightweight knife like the Spyderco Endura carried deployed, under the duty belt, either on the pants belt or IWB. Can't fault his logic and it's good business for me.

You guys should check the laws in your localities. In many places it is illegal to carry a folder open and even systems like the wave which can instaneously open a knife are illegal. I don't know all of the places where this is a problem, but I know open folders in Massachusetts are illegal.

The law in most places regards and a folding knife carried in the open position as a fixed blade. All local restrictions for fixed blade carry will apply.

Fumbler: I picked up the Polkowski/Kasper at a knife/gun show Saturday from a dealer who carries the full line of CRKT. The sheath system can be configured for left or right handed inside the waistband or out or for neck carry, complete with black chain and paracord.

Why not carry it in a closed position, in a kydex sheath designed to open the knife as you draw it. This is possible with practically any knife that has a thumb stud, and may be possibly with Spydie holes as well. Then if you are questioned about it, twist the knife a little in the sheath so that it no longer catches on the thumbstud/Spydie hole, then draw it out for inspection.

This should allow fast deployment but allow it to remain and look legal.

I think Emerson Knives Inc has such a sheath designed for their Commander, its called the Emerson Folder Rig.
this is the pic I took off www.emersonknives.com
SHEATH%20SYSTEM.jpg

Also, the Commander, P-Sark, SOFCK Waved CQC-7 all utilize the wave design, and can be drawn readied in the open position

The type of sheaths that Mike offers can really add utility and function to a knife.

I find that it is easier to carry a knife, the greater my carry options.

Fumbler -- last I knew, Roger at Bayou LaFourche was selling the Polkowski Companion for $29 plus shipping. A bit over the $20 mark, but about as good a deal as is out there.

Wow, great price for any knife.
Sure it's probably AUS 6, but who cares at that price?
Do you think the knife is bulky at all?
I've seen pics and it looks just like the Kaspers, but the Kaspers seem a little bulky in the handle.
What do you think about the knife?

In MA, any device allowing a folding knife to be drawn in the open position is illegal. Given that fixed blades are not illegal I just carry my Patrolman, Litewave, UNK, or Pikuni as needs be.

It is not the fall that kills you. It is the realization that "yes, you did something that stupid."

The Companion is definitely not bulky. A bit larger than I prefer for a neck knife, but very light on the belt and comfortable IWB.
