Carrying a multi-tool in tandem with a dedicated edc knife?

Hey guys, I have been looking at such tools as the Leatherman surge or the The Victoronox Spirit to carry along with one of my EDC folders. I am a big sucker for s30v...but very few multitools come with it:( Given my sage 1 has s30v I was thinking of just carrying that with a lesser bladed multitool (420HC or something soft like that). I could just save up though for a Charge TTi and have a multitool with s30v...but I would be down an additional 100 bucks

What are your guys' opinions and experiences with the matter?

(on a side note, The Skeletool CX has 154cm, how does that compare to my beloved s30v?)

I prefer to carry an EDC folding knife with a MT. I need to be able to open and close my knife with one hand, something most MTs don't do too well, and the ergonomics of a "real knife" handle are better. And then there's the steel quality thing...

For 20 yrs the same Leatherman Classic has ridden on my left hip. In my RFP is one of several traditional slipjoint pocket knives that I EDC. The Leatherman is a tool. The EDC is my "knife". Lately a Vic Farmer rides in a horizontal sheath on my right hip to supplement these.

Three words....

"Loaded for bear"! :D

I always carry a knife as well as my Surge everyday at work .
The Surge is the constant in the equation , the knives come and go depending on my latest acquisitions or requirements .
The reality is that I could just carry the Surge , but hell wheres the fun in that .
For me Surge is work , my SAK's are after work and Weekends .

SwissTool on my left hip, ALOX Farmer in LFP, SpyderCo Tenaciuos clipped to RFP.
Overkill? I carry this set up at work, and actually use all 3 for different tasks.

I edc both when out of the house. I don't like sheath carry so it has to be a pocket-able multi. For the last couple of months it's been a LM Pulse.

I think there are basically 2 criteria for selecting a multi-tool. The first is the "cool factor". MTs are slick and offer all sorts of things to geek out about: the best combination of tools, best steel, plier strength, fit and finish and on and on and on. This is perfectly valid, or at least, just as valid a geeking about the similar issues on regular knives. I mean this sincerely, if this is the direction of your heart, buy the coolest MT to your eye and carry it along side of a cool knife and carry them both because they're cool and it's enjoyable to have them with you. In the grand scheme of things in this life, carrying an MT because it makes you happy is just fine.

The other reason to carry an MT is straight up utility where utility is defined by the jobs you encounter, your carry preference and the tools on and the size/design of the MT.

In reality, I wager that most of carry an MT for some combination of these 2 core reasons.

I'll try to come at it more functionally. Like you and many others here, I prefer pretty much everything about carrying a dedicated pocket knife. I've come to view a knife blade on an MT as being, as my great-grandfather said, as useful as a capon in the hen house. For the most part, I don't use the knife blade. There are, for me, 2 exceptions.

First, for EDC, I carry a knife in the RFP and a Micra in my LFP with a full size Blast riding in my day pack. The blade on the Blast never ever gets used but the small pen blade on the Micra is useful for some cutting tasks that are better with a small blade than with a full sized blade. This is one reason why I think Leatherman did the right thing by downsizing the blades on their Juice line. When I look at small pocket sized MTs, I see them primarily as a backup/companion to my EDC knife and in that usage, having a smaller blade compliments the larger blade of my EDC knife.

The other time I like to have a knife blade on my MT is when using the MT in a shop setting where I'm doing things that I don't want to use my EDC knife blade for like scraping battery terminals, cutting fuel lines and opening pesticide bags. I treat my EDC knife as something as a clean blade and use the MT blade as a dirty blade - but then, I use my EDC knife for eating. Anyway, for this type of stuff, an MT with an external blade like the Wave which sits on my work bench makes sense to me.

The last thing to consider is carry style. I hate holster carry which for me, limits my carry of full sized MTs to either in my pack or in my back pocket. For EDC, I prefer something small. The Micra is just fine. Others might prefer something like the Juice

If you are gonna have an EDC along with it then edge retention won't be as much of a factor as so do I carry a surge and 2 other knives . So the multi-tools blade won't be used as much . So unless the multi-tool is gonna be you main EDC then just get a surge. I've put mine through some very heavy use and it's still perfectly fine. 11/10 for my surge

My carry setup for a long time has been a dedicated folder (because I love the ergonomics and other benefits of a quality folder) paired with a small, non-bladed multitool. My current MT is a Leatherman Style PS. That way, if for some reason I need to go somewhere that knives aren't allowed, I'm not without ALL of my tools. the PS is a great assortment and is very easy to carry clipped to a belt loop.

I've been doing this for a few years now both work and play. for work it's been a LM rebar and whatever knife "feels" right. When not at work knife selection is the same but my multitool is a LM wave.

I normally carry some EDC folding knife. Then either a SAK alox farmer or cadet. I also carry a leatherman squirt in the coin pocket of my jeans.

I always carry another knife with my Charge tti, the s30v blade is good but you do not get the same cutting/slicing ability as you will with a dedicated folder. It is a good blade but other than that I will always carry another knife with me.

I often carry a Benchmade Griptillian along with my Vic Farmer. Nothing wrong with wanting a dedicated knife along with your tool.

I carry a Victorinox Deluxe Tinker in a belt pouch and a Kershaw Drone A/O plain blade in my pocket.

I've been carrying a Leatherman Rebar in my rear right pocket along with my wallet, and my Boker folding hunter in my right front pocket. Like some of the other posters have mentioned, the Rebar blade is good for "dirty" jobs or things that you don't want to mess up a nice knife or edge for. I've also gotten good use out of the screwdrivers and pliers.

I'm happy carrying them in my pockets as mentioned, or in sheaths on my belt.

For a while i carried a Leatherman Skeletool and a Tinker Swiss Army Knife together but after awhile it got to be a big pain in the butt so now i only carry the Tinker

I pair my MT with whatever knife I feel is appropriate for the situation... I feel this method offers me the most versatility.

I mostly carry a Leatherman Juice with a smaller knife like a Benchmade 707 or Spyderco Dice. If I expect to encounter some more demanding tasks, I'll carry my Leatherman Charge TTi with something like a Mini Grip or Rat-2. I'm moving in a couple weeks, so I'll carry my Charge with a Cold Steel Tuff lite and a box cutter most likely.

Just get whatever multi-tool has all the tools you need, and pair that with your favorite knife. I think your Sage 1 will probably outperform any multi-tool's blade any day.

I've had the original Leatherman PST (or whatever the first one was called) in my backpack since the mid-1980s; it's always nearby, but rarely actually on my person. And I just became interested in pocket knives again a year ago. I carried a scout knife every day on the farm from age 9 or 10 until age 17 when I went off to college, and then almost never carried a knife for the next 45 years. Since last January, I always carry one (or more) knives every day, and the Leatherman is still nearby in the backpack. This month, I've been carrying a keychain-sized multi-tool in the pocket of my winter coat.

It's a cheap Chinese replica (Sheffield #12010) of something like a Squirt P4, but it should give me some idea of whether a keychain multi-tool is something that enriches my life and I have to make space for when the weather warms up and I have far less pocket real estate available.
