Carrying a spear for outdoor hikes/camping?

Just wondering, would carrying a spear be a good idea or not?

I would think possible uses would be fishing, hunting or self defense from animals.

Or would it be better to make a makeshift spear from wood in the field by sharpening the ends?

The SOG Fusion Spirit looks like a good tool...

Just want some feedback and opinions.

The knife maker - do not know his name

Carrying socket handle knife like above or CS bushman, you can have both

spear and knife. Spear- weapon, knife- tool, pole- wooden stick mostly legal in the whole world.

While I do like...obviously...the idea of spears in the wilderness or a survival environment...I don't like the idea of carrying the whole spear in initially. I like the idea of having a good serviceable spear head and then making the shaft on location if the need arises.

I like the idea of walking in and coming home with another walking stick/spear/fishing pole :D

The idea of going in minimal and having the ability to make things really appeals to me, so I'd be crafting stuff while out in the bush for survival/entertainment depending on the situation :)

I've never walked around with a spear in hand, but would reccomend caution. Carrying a spear + falling or slipping=/= fun.

Careful out there!

spear, pike, gig, or javelin? THey all can do different things- I wouldn't generally want one of th CS bushies for small game or javelin use, for example (and forget a properly tuned spear/dart throwing setup) - but for poking at big critters, it's great- and as a pike/polearm I'd love it.

I generally am of the "take cordage, glues, and blades along" school of thought. Which doesn't mean make it at the last minute, but might mean thinking about the terrain and uses first.

There is something so cool about carrying a spear in the woods... I can't explain it. Too bad folks tend to freak when they see you with them.

He he... that brings back great memories of being a kid. I loved making and throwing spears in the woods!

By shear coincidence, I was pondering a few days ago making a walking staff from a heavy-wall aluminium tube. Most of the pondering time was spent working out how to arrange a spring-released, latching spear blade from one end. A flick-spear! I might just have to do it.

Very true. Cool spear. I can see how that would raise a few eyebrows.

I have made fire hardened spears on many occasions and often carry a mini-Bushman.

I agree with that. I have occasionally made on on the spot, but never took one with me from the beginning.

Hence my not liking carrying them in initially...freaked out people tend to cause ....issues.

Having a 'walking stick' to which a spear head can be quickly fitted is a grand idea. I have sometimes carried one when hunting with snares where carrying a firearm isn't always legal or convenient. My spear head is a Cold Steel Bushman knife, and I can heartily recommend it. Great value for money.

That makes me think of the movie Zulu.

Where's Color Sargent Bourne when you need him?

I carry a Cold Steel Assegai, the long shaft model, also a CS boar spear sometimes when out in the boonies. I feel very secure with either should I encounter feral dogs, venemous snakes, or two legged jerks. I also carry one when walking on the rural roads in my immediately area. I carry a handgun too but don't want to shoot a neighbor's dog unless it's a last resort. Haven't had to because the butt of the spear is 'big medicine' for dogs who jump fences and come after me. Again, I reserve the sharp end for use as a last resort when a good whack or jab with the staff doesn't discourage the dog or dogs. I guess, as human weapons, rocks and clubs came first but a sharp stick, a spear, must have been right in there too. I do know spears go as far back in history as they've been able to research and they're still a fearsome weapon.

Magnussen, that is about the coolest spear I've ever seen. Isn't that the Cold Steel spear head?
