DOes anyone have any knowledge about carrying a sword (sharp katana) in the sheath to and from martial arts practice in NYC? The law seems to leave some wiggle room, here:

B.

It shall be unlawful for any person to carry on his or her person or
have in such person's possession, in any public place, street or park
any knife which has a blade length of four inches or more.

D.

The provisions of subdivisions b and c of this sections shall not
apply to
(5) any person displaying or in possession of a knife otherwise in
violation of this section when such a knife (a) is being used for or
transported immediately to or from a place where it is used for
hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, picnicking or any employment,
trade or occupation customarily requiring the use of such knife;

Does anyone have any links to case law and court decisisons about this?

Thank you!

Don't know any case law to refer to but it would be much better if it was in a case. You never know when someone sees a sword and calls the cops. In the old days while in high school and college I was a fencer and traveled by subway to competitions. The swords were in the typical equipment bag ,somewhat pear shaped and most people didn't know what it was , and sometimes they would ask. Of course in those days people were not hysterical as they are today !!!

according to that, it's fine to transport your katana to and from training...

Thanks for the responses! I do carry it in a bag, some students haven't been though. I have ben trying to encourage them to be more discreet.

I don't know of any good solution to the sheeple problem, but these days a 3' stick will probably cause people to think "gun!"

Well, if the bag is ornate or simply doesn't scream "CONCEALED TACTICAL THING" (such as the generic blue sword bags, or something made out of obi material), I doubt it will raise any eyebrows.

Its OK to carry to and from practice. I carry my ASP baton to and from class. I was told by the local precint (34th) that it is okay to do so. I still feel however, that if I were to use it in self denfense while carring to and from class that I would still be facing an illegal weapons charge. So if something happens while you are carring your sword, reach for you sub 4 inch knife and you will be okay.
