Case Large Trapper---Single Blade

Thought I'd put up a quick thread about a knife I've really been enjoying this weekend. It's a Case large trapper but instead of the usual clip and spey, this one has only the clip---and a bonus is the nice filework.

This is one I bought quite a while back but had set it aside in that "too pretty to use" category till I decided what to do with it. Well, I use my knives, even though it's usually light duty, so I knew I'd eventually either use it or sell it. I finally decided to do the former and so sharpened it up this weekend and gave it a go.

The CV hollow ground clip blade quickly took a beautiful sharp edge, and has been a breeze to touch up with a strop. I had some kitchen duty last night, and instead of the petty I'd usually reach for, I let the Case do the honors. The blade is substantial for a trad with a full 3" of cutting surface, and it handled the job without breaking a sweat (and got a nice patina started, to boot). The handle is large and very comfortable and adds to the pleasure of using this knife.

I've had a few Case full size trappers and while they were all quality knives, they were a little bulky and heavy for me and I ended up selling them. This one, as a single blade, is slimmer and lighter, weighing in at a moderate 2.6 oz. It's an easy pocket carry.

Finally, as to its history, in a thread I put up when I first got it, Mike (knifeswapper) pointed out that this single blade isn't a production knife or a SFO because, if it were, there would be a pattern number on the back side of the tang. There's not, so it would've been on the spey which was removed, probably at the same time the file work was done.

In any event, I'm happy I decided to put this pretty boy in the rotation---it made for a weekend with a lot of grins. :)

Andrew, very nice Case knife - glad you decided to "treat yourself" and enjoy your own knife - that is hard to do for many of us! You have good taste. OH

Dern nice jigging on that one! Is that a touch of the worm I see on the back? Either way just gorgeous, and I agree with OH, way to treat yourself. 😎 👍

Nice knife. It kind of looks like the Back Pocket model, except from your description, the blade might be just a bit shorter. Anyway, if you're going to treat yourself, might as well do it right.

Verry nice! I've had a lot of standard 4.125" trappers over the years, but they've 2nd eragreed with me. Love the look, but never much in use. Except any I've taken down to a single blade! Then their great! I especially love my slimline trapper, even slimmer but still a lot of slicing blade on it!

Your not helping me either, lately I've been browsing trying to find a single blade non slimline trapper to get... Had decided I really didn't need it till your pics! ;) Now I might just have to get a shiny new Case to de-spey...

Also, Is it me, or is a Case trapper without the end cap/bolster rare, even on double blades? Just thinking might not be stock scales on it, and it lost some bolsters with the spey blade.

Very decent. The filework and what look like thick handle slabs make for a comfortable in hand knife. Actually, I think it's a great deal more alluring than the full Trapper with that Spey I've never got on with. A pretty but rugged knife, that's what I look for in a carry too.

Thanks, Will

I'm not a fan of filework, but overall that knife is GORGEOUS. The trapper is a little thick for my tastes, but I'd jump on a single-blader like this like a dog on a bone!

I haven't seen many, so I think they only came with a couple different handle materials. I have a jigged rosewood trapper that's a bare head. It happens to be my favorite trapper and possibly my favorite Case in general. I wish they made more of them...

Thanks for all the nice comments, gents.

This is such a simple and enjoyable configuration---I'd like to see Case do a run of it every now and again.

that is a very cool case, definitely more impressive than the slim trappers i seemed to have gotten my hands on
