Thought I'd put up a quick thread about a knife I've really been enjoying this weekend. It's a Case large trapper but instead of the usual clip and spey, this one has only the clip---and a bonus is the nice filework.
This is one I bought quite a while back but had set it aside in that "too pretty to use" category till I decided what to do with it. Well, I use my knives, even though it's usually light duty, so I knew I'd eventually either use it or sell it. I finally decided to do the former and so sharpened it up this weekend and gave it a go.
The CV hollow ground clip blade quickly took a beautiful sharp edge, and has been a breeze to touch up with a strop. I had some kitchen duty last night, and instead of the petty I'd usually reach for, I let the Case do the honors. The blade is substantial for a trad with a full 3" of cutting surface, and it handled the job without breaking a sweat (and got a nice patina started, to boot). The handle is large and very comfortable and adds to the pleasure of using this knife.
I've had a few Case full size trappers and while they were all quality knives, they were a little bulky and heavy for me and I ended up selling them. This one, as a single blade, is slimmer and lighter, weighing in at a moderate 2.6 oz. It's an easy pocket carry.
Finally, as to its history, in a thread I put up when I first got it, Mike (knifeswapper) pointed out that this single blade isn't a production knife or a SFO because, if it were, there would be a pattern number on the back side of the tang. There's not, so it would've been on the spey which was removed, probably at the same time the file work was done.
In any event, I'm happy I decided to put this pretty boy in the rotation---it made for a weekend with a lot of grins.
