I am trying to decide between a Case Medium Stockman and Mini Trapper for my next purchase. Which one do you guys like best? Which one would be the better knife for edc use? Thanks

I think it depends on your pants pockets. The stockman carries a bit smaller and will disappear into kakis. The mini trapper, while the same length is a bit wider. So it may show in your pocket a bit more. The advantage is that you get a thicker handle to hold.

I carried a Case med stockman for 10+ years, so I'd say stockman. Either will serve you well.

is the mini-trapper the 3.5" or the even smaller one?
the stockman has 3 blades and OCCASIONALLY if your using it hard it can dig into your hand, for me the trapper is more comfortable
but as mark stated, the stockman usually rides better in your pants pocket

what tasks do you have in mind, your edc use may be much different than mine
also what sort of clothes you wear is something to consider as well.

I personally prefer the mini trapper over a stockman especially if it has a wharncliffe or pen secondary. It's a great size for the pocket. I regularly carry my single blade mini trappers (both of them have wharnecliffe blades). I also like a 6232 or 62032 Texas jack over a stockman. I think I am probably in the minority though.

Both of these are from the stag rancher series.

Thanks guys, I wear jeans most of the time so the size is not really an issue. I work in the Oil and Gas industry so the knife will be used for all kinds of tasks from scrapping to stripping wires, cutting cardboard, opening packages, and whatever else I might need to cut during the day.

hrm,
well which do you prefer?
3 blades or 2?

blade versatility or handle comfort?
cause thats basically what its coming down to...

(dont get me wrong, stockman have been popular for DECADES if not longer, so its not like its uncomfortable, just that i feel the trapper handles are more comfortable)

I'd go with the versatility of the stockman. Those three blades can do a whole lot, and I've never had any real issue with handle comfort.

The medium stockman, very pocket friendly, both two springs, both have clip & spey blades, and you get the bonus of the sheepsfoot which is the blade I tend to use the most.

What MC said. Can't state it any better.

They are both great knives like others have said so you really can't go wrong either way. I would personally go with the trapper tho as I think the trapper's long spey is much more useful than the stockman's short one.

My favorite blade, by far, for package-opening and cardboard cutting is a sheepfoot. The tip of that straight-edged blade is perfect for the initial piercing cut into clamshell packaging, and also for cutting the tops off of cardboard boxes (ala box-cutter). Trappers don't come with a sheepfoot blade, so that means the stockman will always be my favorite. I use the sheepfoot blade probably 3x as often as the other two blades, though the spey makes a great 'pocket scalpel', and the clip is my all-time favorite steak knife (makes a nice letter/mail-opener as well). :)

Hey guys,
Both are lovely pocket knives, almost the same size.
I don't know which I like more but the fact is the stockman spends more time in my pocket so I think I like it a little more than the mini trapper
A pic of both having breakfast with me:

 Sheepsfoot for cardboard and packaging.

I have bouth those knifes in cv.
The stockman was a gift from forummember Sunnyd and therefore has a little special position in my small EDC rotation. Its my most carryed knife since the last 3 1/2 years.
Pressed to give a advise about the 2 I inspite of that would recomend the Trapper. At 3.5 with a rounded but its very pocket friendly. 2 blades is cind of enough and the fact they are bouth full length for the frame is mostly a + in my book. The clip has a wounderful point and the spay is pinchable. This is the main reason I give advise of the minitrapper above the medium stockman. the trapper with bouth blades in the same end of the handle and vith a full liner between the 2 blades also makes it easyer to clean. Bouth of them is as perfect knifes this size can be so this is 99% about personal taste. If I could keep only one of them the trapper had to leave but this has nothing to do with anything else than feelings.

I have the Mini Trapper and the Medium Stockman.

The Mini Trapper SS (Amber Bone) was my very first america traditional overall. I got it some years back and since then, it has a special place in my "collection".

The Medium Stockman CV (Chestnut Bone) was the knife I bought after it and I was really overwhelmed by its shape, and usefulness. It was my only EDC for about nine months, until I discovered GEC.

I, personally, tend to the Stockman. But with the little pen instead of the spey. The sheepfoot is my most used blade on this knife for general cutting tasks. I don´t want to tell bad things about the Mini Trapper, but I´ve hardly used the spey blade. Same length as the clipblade and no real tip. If there would be a secondary wharnie or sheepfoot, it would be ok.

If you don´t need a third blade, but want a smaller secondary blade, you should try a regular jackknife-pattern.

If you want a third blade - the Stockman would be yours.

One thing about the size. The Case Mini Trapper and Medium Stockman have the same length. But the Mini Trapper is a little broader. Not that much, but a little. When you carry it, you won´t realized the difference. Though I was lucky enough to get the Mini Trapper with pretty thick bone scales.

Keep in mind that what Case calls a "medium" stockman ranges from the 3 1/4" 6334 pattern (smaller than a Schrade 34OT) all the way to the 3 7/8" 6347, with several models inbetween.

In regards to the medium stockman, I'd recommend the 63032, as I find the pen blade far more useful than a spay. Likewise, I'd recommend finding a wharncliffe mini trapper over the standard version. Between these two knives, it's hard to pick one over the other. Personally, the edge (pardon the pun) goes to a wharncliffe mini trapper because I like straight edged blades for opening packages or cutting cardboard. Yes, the stockman has a sheepsfoot blade which can do the same, but the edge is longer on the WMT. The pen blade on a 63032 is very useful for delicate, precision work, but I find that the clip blade on the trapper is thin enough for just about anything, short of wanting a scalpel. For you, I guess it depends on which you would prefer: having a pen blade, or having a long straight edge.

I do not own any of those two knives, so take my word for what it is: pure theoretical speculation.
But my vote goes for the mini trapper, if you find the wharncliffe version. If you could take out the sheepsfoot secondary blade from the mediumd stockman and put it on the mini trapper, I would take it in a second.
Meanwhile, I'd go with the wharncliffe trapper. I agree with david on the sheepsfoot...but personally the spey blade gets too much in the way.

This Boker 2 blade stockman is a nice compromise, if you can find one. Not that many were made, but there are some around to be had.

The very first pocketknife I ever had was a mini trapper. Sadly, it was stolen (by my own dad). My EDC since September the 12th has been a Medium Stockman (3 5/8" w/red bone) and the first knife I've had with a sheepsfoot. I love having 3 blades, especially with just two springs. Stockmen and Trappers are my favorite knife patterns so theres not much bias when I say that if I had to choose only one, I'd choose my medium stockman everytime. As stated earlier, you can get a medium stockman anywhere from 3 3/8" to 3 7/8", but no matter what size you choose, you won't be dissapointed. It is true about the comfort in hand though, but no blade style is perfect.
