I'm thinking of getting a medium sized Case sheath knife. T

Case currently produces two similar series of hunting knives. One series of knives have the traditional "birds head" style pommel, and the other have the "mushroom" style pommel. Both series have leather stacked washers and some interesting blade shapes. They also have a matched set of knives in a piggyback sheath called the "Twin Fin".

There don't seem to be a lot of reviews around on these knives. Does anyone own any of them, and what is your opinion? In general do you prefer the mushroom or bird's head pommel.

Here is a links to their current web site:

4" Skinner's -- both versions
I'm particularly interested in this model, and sort of torn between the two variations.

The "Twin Fin" - 5" and 3" blades.

I just got the 3rd one down.. Had it about a month.. Havent processed any game yet with it but did slice some tomatoes!! It is balanced in my size med lg hands.. The grip is comfortable also.. I like CASES steel too.. The sheath holds the knife very secure.. Just did a 5 mile hike yesterday with this knife on my belt.. Not heavy at all as I hardly noticed it there.. John

I think your money would be better spent on a Hess. I have both and the case handle got loose super fast. Hess is made like the old marbles.

I use a Lil Finn for cleaning rabbits.. Going on 10yrs and the handle shows no signs of loosing..

I do like Hess knives though.. But I will keep my CASE..;) John:D

Probably just one bad experience.
I've had knives I've had a bad experience with and didn't write them off as bad because I had only heard good things about them and no tales of my same experience from others.

I agree. Hard to beat a hess though they are hand made in garage by a guy that used to work for Marbles. Gec steel and convex grind like BRKT. They are a little more money. If Case made those knives in CV i prob would have bought more lol.

I didnt mean to write anyone off. I was just suggesting a similar knife that i feel has better features. Although not everyone likes carbon steel or convex grinds. In that case Case would be a way better option.

The case isn't available in their CV steel ?
Well that sucks.
BUCK fixed blades in 420Hc is one thing because that's their main steel, but Case uses quite a bit of their CV steel and it's a shame they don't offer their fixed blades in it.

Yeah if somone knows different speak up. I wish they would use more CV!

I have the Case Leather Hunter (365-5 SS). No problems with the handle. I like their Tru-Sharp Stainless Steel. I especially like the clean look for food prep. The blade is not overly thick, so it slices through food well. I prefer the "birds head" style pommel, you can really lock in on it. But I have tried the "mushroom" style pommel and it is good too. For really large hands the later might be better.

I participated in a "Knife Pass" several years ago on AAPK using a Case 365-5 SS. It was a good knife and was used by many different hunters and fishermen across the country. I only used it on one deer, but some members used it on fish and deer - general consensus was very good knife, held a good edge, leather handle was fine (slightly roughed up - good grip), no issues at all. It was in the Birds Head pommel version. My only drawback was the 5" length as I find that to be an inch longer than I prefer (for reference my prefered whitetail knife is a Buck 118 - very similar design but an inch shorter). The Case Knife 5" length was an advantage when cleaning fish. OH

Thanks for all the responses. Also, thanks to the Admin who moved this over to the Traditional Knives channel for me. (I'll be more careful in the future.)

After mulling it over a bit more I ordered the Case 518, the 4" Drop Point with the bird's head grip. It should be here in a few days. I'll post some pix when I get it.

Ol, they're definitely attractive knives, and I wouldn't hate to own some day. There's just too many knives that catch my interest and I can't go for all of them.
