Hi everyone- new to the forum, been collecting knives on and off for decades. I inherited my pop's collection some time ago and have been doing some cataloging lately. I found a WR Case and Sons straight razor in box and of course looked it up. I was surprised at some of the prices I see, and keep thinking I am missing some detail that sets those apart from the one I have. I did find a small blemish, but I'm wondering more about the variations and values.

Anyone know how to determine year/etc ?

Thanks for any info you have,

Zane

Thank God you posted pictures!

Everyone screams for that like ice cream!

'I scream, I scream, I scream for ice cream! Yaaaay'

From a straight razor user, that is a nice razor. There are numerous manufacturers. Some old school like Case, Wade & Butcher and some newer school variants. Being it was inherited adds to it

I acquired the following information from a Case employee on a straight razor forum.

Your razor was made in 2001, it was a special series. Yours is model 20976, blonde plastic handles. 552 of that model were made. They were made by a German company in Solingen named Dovo.

Here is a catalog page that the employee posted. Your razor is third up from the bottom on the right. I cant make the pic any bigger without it blurring. The blade in the catalog has the same etch as yours, but it doesn't show in the pic. Same exact handle mark as well.

A piece of advice, when trying to determine dollar value, check to see what they are selling for, not what people are asking. Below I posted a pic of another 2001 razor from the same series as yours (black plastic handle, 553 were made, 2nd from the bottom in the catalog pic). It sold on ebay for $87.

Just awesome! Thank you so much. I really appreciate the answer and the advice. I saw some of the blonde ones going for $300 and up - not just asking, but selling for, and that seemed out off whack, which is why I asked here. Sounds like I am not missing something, there was a jump in "value".

Thanks again,

Zane

That's pretty cool, I didn't know Case had straight razors, even if it's not made by them. They might be valued well because of the built in collector market for Case combined with decent quality. Dovo is one of only three production straight razor companies remaining that are considered good quality, along with Thiers Issard and Böker. A full sized regular razor from one of these brands will run you $200 or so, so I guess this would be a more collectible variant? Straight razors have come way down in popularity and value since the hipster fad passed, but those prices don't seem totally out of line.

Nifty find. I recall my grandfather nicking himself on the cheek while shaving with his straight razor when I was a kid. Let us know how well it shaves;).
