Case Wharncliffe Mini-Trapper

Has anyone purchased the new Case Sawcut Bone Mini-Trapper with the wharncliffe blade instead of the spey blade ?

Are the blades hollow ground or flat grind. I have a mini trapper that I like, but I think I would prefer the mini trapper.

Any comments or review would be appreciated.

I've got one with different covers. I much prefer the wharncliffe to the spey models. I also have two single blade wharncliffe mini-trappers that I use quite a bit.

Here's a shot of the two ultraviolet smooth bone wharncliffe trappers I have. Covers are an ugly color, but the knives are great.

I REMEMBER THOSE!!!
Those were the very first knives i'd fixated on when i first discovered this forum
very cook, still very cool!
 
They don't look as blue in the flesh as they do in the picture. And I do like that mini trapper quite a bit.

I am eying picking up one of the sawcut bone ones mentioned in the OP. Looks good to me in the stock photos; probably better in the flesh.

Nope. According to the tracking number, I won't have this in my hands until Tues night. Bummer.

My 2007 Case wharncliffe mini trapper in red bone is one of my most carried traditional knives. The ~3.5" size is perfect for me. Long enough to make the blades useful, small enough to pocket comfortably. And of course, the blade choice is the most useful you can get in a 2 blade knife, IMO. Unfortunately, so many of the wharncliffe trappers Case has mad have been in violently bright neon colors, both in smooth and jigged bone versions. I was very to find my NOS 2007 mini trapper, since the color was far more "normal", plus the jigging was great. If I didn't have this knife, I'd probably be jumping all over this new sawcut model.

FYI, the clip blade is hollow ground, but the wharncliffe blade is flat ground. At least, that's the way it is on mine, and I assume they're not doing it any differently on this new model.

If Case offered one in CV carbon steel, I'd be all over it, assuming they made it in yellow delrin or their chestnut bone. I'd love to get a stag/damascus one, but they're a bit pricey for me right now.
 
Sawcut sounds like a very worthwhile option. It's a decent pattern, but mine are in a rather christmas like red...an acid trip algae green, and an emerald smooth bone. All well turned out knives mind, but you have to 'adjust' to the colours somewhat......
 
I have the "acid trip green", err, green apple, love that description Will :D, and I love the knife even more:

The sawcut looks good. I was surprised to see it on sale 'over here' - if only on the internet unfortunately.

Being a fan of color this just cost me a few bucks. I need to quit reading these threads.I went looking for this color but ended up finding a Periwinkle (purple) bone Case 10111 (CAJV0710111) full size Trapper with a wharni blade. I do so like the wharncliffes.

I received my Case Mini Wharncliffe Trapper with Sawcut Antique Bone covers today.
The blades are slightly hollow ground. I had to lay a straight edge across the blade to really see it.
  • The fit and finish is very good. Might be some very minor gaps between the springs. But there might not. Could be a shadow. In any case I don't find it objectionable. The blades are perfectly centered in the handle in the closed position.
  • The blades were quite sharp out-of -the-box.
  • Both blades have half stops.
  • The pull on each is about a 5 on a scale of 1-10.
  • The bone handles have a good feel to them. No gaps. Everything just so.

I can't say more till I've carried it and used it a bit. But I am pleased with the purchase.

Reminds me a bit of the GEC "Furtaker" Trapper. I'm a sucker for Wharncliffe blades, they are very easy to sharpen.

Interesting-- I thought my 2009 Mini Trapper's blades were hollow ground, but didn't think through how to verify it until reading this (they are).

Sounds great, Frank!

I would describe mine just the same, although with no gaps (for sure ;)). It's nice to know that Case is producing this pattern with some degree of consistency.

(I know the clip blade is technically the main blade on this pattern, but the wharncliffe/lamb foot is so readily pinch-able, I consider it primary.)

I just picked one up today. I love this pattern with the wharncliffe blade. It's almost an addiction. Ever since I got the smooth orange bone version it's been a romance. The sawcut bone looks much nicer in person. This photo really doesn't do it justice at all.

btw, that green apple model is awesome! I'd love to find one like that.

 
Brasso3, that looks really nice. So, does Sarah's blue ones. I guess I need to pick up an urple one to match my two larger ones if I can find one. Not sure they made a tiny trapper in that cover.

I find myself gravitating to my single blade mini trappers because of the color mostly.

Cameras are still MIA due to the remodel, but I agree that I really really like the design. It isn't as robust as the forum knife, but I find it a tad more pocket friendly.
