Who has used them on Carbon Steel and how do they hold up?

I have no experience with blade coatings, but I was thinking of cold blueing one of my knives so I put up a thread in the maintainance and tinkering sub forum. The idea got shot down very quickly for hard use knives because it isn't durrable enough and does little if anything to prevent rust. Personally I don't like coated blades, but the one I was going to do will be going to my brother who does. Looks likre he it just getting a high polished knife

Having used Blueing it in the past I can tell U it is a mistake.
If the blade is ever used to cut anything edible it is toxic an leaves a Nasty taste behind.
Limits its use considerably

All mentioned are paints. Tough paints, but still paints. None will hold up to much use.

I would like to find out how sigarms does there black nitron finish on there ss slides.... its an extremely durable finish that I think would work well for knives.

GunKote's over-rated, used it for quite a few years, found that plain ol' Rustoleum textured enamel is more durable.

Nitriding is absolutely the best metal finish. It can only be done commercially.

Gun kote is more durable, but the ceramic has a nicer look (not as shiney)
Was going to try powder coat, seems like it should be more durable than paint. Holds up well on bike parts, and they take a beating out on the road.

Yeah, TiN and alpha coatings really take the cake in terms of being able to hold up to wear as well as providing an actual performance boost. Personally I still prefer a nice hand finished blade, but if I could get TiN coatings I'd definitely get them done on a few knives.

Well just arrived today is a Spray can of Wheeler Cerama-Coat from Midway.
BTW There customer service is outstanding!
Anyway I will be doing a Step by Step review of this product including a bunch of chopping tests to test durability.
Would like to do a side by side Real-Life review of all the finishes mentioned...
That will depend on selling a few knives or getting a Few Donations to offset some of the costs involved. We will see...
Will be doing at least one blade this weekend.

Buy the right steel for the job and forget the coatings unless you are going to black ops. type thing. Frank

That ceracoat wears off also, coated my EDC knife with it and just from going in and out of the leather sheath it shows shines of wear.
Thinking of trying powder coat.

Just a shot form the sidelines. Flatgrinder mentioned rustoleum to be more durable and Halecky mentioned ceramics... would a Ceramic brake caliper paint do the trick? I've never used it on a knife before, but the applications where I have used it seemed to be very durable.

I am thinking of starting a "Coatings War" thread to help prove or disprove allot of the bunk!
Along the lines of "Glue Wars" which yielded some surprising results.
