Chicago Screws

So I'm doing my research to start getting into some kydex sheath making and am wondering what size chicago screw would fit through 4 pieces of kydex (2 for the sheath, 2 for the belt loop) and fit through 2 3/16 eyelets (such as these: http://www.knifekits.com/vcom/product_info.php?cPath=41_56&products_id=657)?

I appologize ahead of time if this is a stupid question. I've never really been much of a tool guy, but im planning on changing that.

the 3/16 eyelets won't fit the Chicago screws, you need the 1/4.
the length of the screw needed depends on the thickness of the kydex you use, and whether you use eyelets or not.
The length of the screw is pretty critical. The .400 might not be able to tighten enough, a rubber washer takes care of that, and the .250 might be shortish.
Maybe order 2 of the .500 chicagoscrews too. Not only are the posts longer, but the screws too. Combing a longer screw with a shorter post might be the trick..

Good Luck!

Thanks for the help!

I have been going through the pages of sheath discussions and have seen alot of your sheaths. The kydex and leather is absolutely beautiful. I am extremely impressed with your work.

Most Chicaco screws are kinda short for thicker stuff unless you manage to find some longer ones like Martin mentioned. I personally like the open-ended variety which are threaded completely though. Gives you more options by using different sized screws without having to keep different sizes of posts. Some outfits sell screw/post/bushing sets for kydex applications, but I found that gets expensive if you're doing more than just a couple of sheaths. What I did is put my own sets together by purchasing the parts separately in bulk as such:

- 1/4" open-ended screw posts
- 8-32 x 1/2" stainless black oxide oval head machine screws
- Bushings (which are basically bibb/faucet washers available online or in the plumbing section of your local hardware store)

I like this idea. Didnt really think about it. Thanks!
