Chinese short sword

A Gladius might have wood or leather. The Gladius would probably have a spike tang then wood handle /pommel /guard put over that .Then somtimes wrapped with leather. They are skinny handles and look skinnier because of the large pommel.
But men were smaller in those days.

Of course,^ but maybe horseclover knows how these handles were made.
I'm just curious.

In reading several articles about this find (start with the Chinese papers), there is examination ongoing with the sword. Some of the Chinese bronze short swords were cast with integral grips, this one seems a bit different. Look to museum sites and other such. https://sites.google.com/a/brvgs.k12.va.us/zhoutechnologyproject/Home/zhou-calendar-by-kara-carter. I don't think it much earlier than the two swords shown there because the waterway didn't exist 3,000 years ago. Automatically, western press has assigned anything in that millennium bc as 3,000 years old.

It is a bit disheartening to me that all short swords get labeled as a gladius. That is a bit like labeling all sabres as katana. I guess I need a chill pill or should just try to see the humor in the trend but it really does (to me) seem like many would just as soon skip learning histories and cultures.

Looks like a smachet to me ;)

It is also quite possibly a hoax.

I thought the hoax swords had to be stamped Made in China . It's sometimes hard to tell .Some things are easy to copy An antique dealer friend wouldn't touch pewter as it's too easy to copy. After the Romans conquered the Etruscans it became fashionable to have Etruscan artifacts -that started a market for fake Etruscan pieces of pottery.

Horseclover , please let us know if you find more info.

Could be duck weed but probably nasty Soylent Green.
All these stories from other countries are usually filled with mistakes.

It was likely thrown into the water by one of the sellers of fake Chinese "antiques" on ebay to give it that nice aged look. The seller was probably fairly peeved when he saw this on the news. :D

It will be interesting if it turns out to be a genuine antique.

OK - I hope this turns out to be a genuine find (if its not, please tell me).
I am in the process of making (as soon as my hydraulic press is fixed) an iron/steel Han Jian that is a lot like this find. Only bigger, since it is inspired by the iron swords that came later and could be forged.
thanks for sharing.
