Just looked at the latest Popular Mechanics mag. And there is a maker named Chris Williams prominently displayed in the "New Pioneers" section. Page 73. Congratulations Chris!

Seems like I have read about him before. Advertises in Garden and Gun also. Is he a member here? Anyone have any experience with his hand made knives? They seem to bring pretty good money based on his website. Heirloom quality, and all that.

According to the article in Popular Mechanics: Williams says "a customer bought a blade for his brother, who had consistently placed second int the amateur division of the National Oyster Shucking Contest.(who knew?). Since receiving an Edisto blade he's won the past three years in a row"

I kid you not.

Congratulations!!!!!!!

Just to be clear this is NOT the same Chris Williams from Wilmont Grinders. Chris (Wilmont Grinders) is a stand up guy and a hell of great American!

My Spidey sense is tingling with your post.

Oooohhh, I remember that mess. What a shame.

I searched Chris Williams and got 3 pages of nothing about Chris Williams. Otherwise I would have just posted there. I guess. But yea, I thought I remembered seeing that here. Probably the "most famous" knifemaker I've seen in mainstream publications. And he makes his "custom", "handmade" knives from blanks. Blanks that are available to pretty much anyone. For what? 5 bucks apiece? Great work if you can get it.

The quote I included, about the brother buying a knife and then his brother winning "The amateur division of the Oyster shucking competition" pretty much sums up my thoughts on Chris Williams. You'll notice nowhere does it say "The Winner!" actually used this Oyster knife. Just that his brother, supposedly, bought the knife. But it is sure implied that he used it to win. But, then again, you can't accuse him of lying. Or even check his facts. Cause all he actually said was someone bought one of his knives. Knives that cost......300 bucks? Built on a $5.00 blank.

I'm not looking at his site right now. Or your link to previous thread. If I'm exaggerating about the cost of blanks or cost of his knives then please correct me.

Not sure why you are directing your post to me... I don't give 2 flying frogs what he does, as long as it is far from here.

Mods, PLEASE, do we have to rehash this crap again????? Please, for the love of your fellow man, shut it down.

Paul

It's good for those that don't know. It helps the new generation of knife buyers that may think they are getting some sort of exclusive custom knife, that is actually a $10 blank with some neat-o handle scales. Caveat emptor.

I don't know what your motives are posting any of this?

All you need to know right there in that link.

Yea, I see. Now. Pretty interesting thread actually. As I said earlier, if I had found it I probably would have just posted his lastet accolades there. But I didn't. My bad.

But, sometimes people change. Grow. Improve. Sometimes feedback can make folks rethink their ways. But a lot of times they don't think that they need to do anything differently. Which seems to be the case here. If I didn't have any conscience and were selling as many of my knives as this maker then I wouldn't do anything differently either. But, I do have a conscience and personally couldn't be selling those knives at those prices, and IMO ripping off ignorant people. But that's just me. Having a conscience has cost me a lot of money over the years. But it is worth it. My mind is clear and I have no one I have ever wronged and not apologized to, and made right, after I realized my mistake. So, I'm not near rich, but I have that. Plus it never took me years to do it.

Maybe off topic. But in the last issue of Garden and Gun, where I also saw Mr Williams ad, there was a couple selling Opinels that they had painted with a kinda nautical stripe, that they were selling for $68 each. Based on the ad I didn't see anything wrong with it. A little embellishment as in "fine french hardwood and Scandavian stainless steel" but other wise, just marketing. I don't think they are a member here but if ya'll are then I'd like to hear from you. Maybe there's some difference. Maybe not. I guess it's in the "eye of the beholder". Or something.

Ya, he's a tool who puts handles on knives somebody else designed and ground...Want to know anything else?

sirupatespecial, Sorry, your post just looked suspicious considering what is known about the supposed maker.

Yea. I'd like to know who, or what, he knows that keeps getting him featured in major publications. Being a great self promoter is, apparently, a secret to fame and riches. As P.T Barnum famously said(yes I know he didn't really say it. But it's still a great quote) "There's a sucker born every minute." Just because it's true doesn't mean it's o.k to exploit it. But again, I do have a conscience. I'm beginning to think that is more a fault than a virtue......

No problem. And it's partially my fault for not doing a better search here. I think the new info probably would have had more impact if used in the previous thread. I didn't remember where I had seen it before. Thought it was here......
