I saw a clam pack Griptilian on sale on my the favorite online knifeshop. I wanted to what it is all about, but couldn't find any information online. Well, since I got suckered into and bought the knife, I thought I should post up some pics. I present a clam pack Griptilian!
Front: printed highlights of Griptilian - Axis lock, 154CM, etc. It has check box for various Griptilian models. I guess they make Clam Pack models for most of the models.
Rear: Noticed that it says 2007. I'm not sure if Benchmade produces clam packs anymore.
Side view: not the greatest packaging. The whole knife and Axis lock are clearly visible, which is good. But, knife is left unprotected.
I had to take out a knife to open another knife box. What an irony. I use my utility beater UZI.
Contents: Benchmade 551SBK-NA Sea-Bee Griptilian, Axis lock ticket, and user manual. Yeah, it's missing the satin black pouch!
Knife opened: US Navy Sea-Bee battalion logo is engraved on the blade of Benchmade logo side. My understanding is Sea-Bea is Navy construction battalion.
I'm not a fan of combo edge at all. I don't hate them, but I'd take plain edge over combo anytime. The shop had only combo edge, unfortunately.
Clip side: painted standard Benchmade clip, markings of Mel Pardue design and 154CM. A typical Griptilian.
As I mentioned above, this is not the best clam back. The spine of the blade is scuffed by the packaging itself. I was a bit disappointed, but I think I can live with it. After all, a Griptilian should be a true utility folder, rather than a collection item (well, you can collect anything I guess).
I switched out the thumb studs to satin silver ones. I like it better this way than all black.
It's interesting to see a clam pack. I actually saw this in a knife shop few years ago and was a bit disappointed for I was afraid Benchmade quality and reputation may be compromised. I guess I was wrong. Benchmade still produces great quality knives and well, this Griptilian is no different from any blue class boxed Griptilian (sans the pouch).
If you don't care about the box/pouch, just open it up (with a knife, of course) and start using it, I think there is nothing wrong with the clam pack. However, I hope not to see too many of clam packs from so-called premium knives such as Benchmade and Spyderco. There is something about a knife comes in a box. I'd say leave the clam pack for less expensive brand/knife companies.
