clamshell packaging

Do you keep it for your user knives or toss it out?

The important word here is "user". I'd say once the knife is used having the clamshell adds no value so I say pitch it.
As a collector I avoid clamshell although I do have some. I have tried various methods of opening from the rear so it still looks intact from the front.
I have to be able to fondle my knives and it's tough to open a clamshell neatly and still call your knife "as new in box"

I have three Buck Knives that I bought in the last two years that came in clamshell packages; two versions of the current 110 50th Anniversary models and a Buck 113 fixed blade skinning knife. I opened them all very carefully with a thought towards keeping the packages, however I ended up keeping only the papers that came packed inside with the knives and tossing the clamshells. I have used the 113 to skin a couple of deer, but I intend to keep the 110's in pristine shape - the packages wouldn't allow me to handle or open my knives - so the plastic is gone! OH

thats kinda my issue right now. I bought a 110 Boone and Crocket Collecter tin from Dicks sportings goods. I can acutally put it all back in the clam shell just find since it was a snap together type. But they have a 50th aniv 110 I wouldnt mind adding for the collector part of my collection. Just bought my 340 from BPS I kept the packaging mostly in tact, but it has become my EDC. But im also the type to keep all my boxes for anything hobby wise I have for that just incase scenario I can still say I have the packaging if I need to sell it. I have all my boxes for all my fishing reels that came with one, same for all my camera equipment. I guess I want a box I need to find a retailer that does them or order from buck. Too bad you cant order empty but labeled boxes from buck for a $1

I don't have the patience or the skill to open a clamshell carefully enough to make it worth saving, so after that new Buck is in my hands, everything else goes in the trash.

The last time I bought a buck in a clamshell, I used another buck to slice it open and get out the new beauty! :)

Ha - me too! The Sheepfoot blade on my Buck 301 freed my other Buck's from their clamshell prison cells!

Once it is a user then I would say the box/clam shell is of little value. I had a large collection of boxes to match my large collection of knives and I got rid of several of the less important boxes a few years ago....

If my knife is going to be a user then the package will go. If I am going to save a BUCK and it is in a clamshell packaging I do not open it. For some reason if I do not get rid of the packaging or box for a user it will get pulled from rotation and back in the box.

I do the same on opening my new knives and go one step farther. I open new Buck with a Buck and open a new Case with a Case.

Ditto for me, plus I'm not collecting knives with any idea of preserving them in mint condition. Every knife a user knife.

You guys are talking a valid point from the collector point of view. When buying a clamshell packaged Buck, what is the proper thing to do to make it the most valuable as a collector piece. My first reaction would be to, not open the package. If you want a user sure get it out. But, are opened clamshells even with unused - mint knives a strike against you. Like having a box with no papers is a strike or a torn up box is also.

I don't know what to say that is absolutely correct. I do have a couple of the first knives in clam packing and the package is starting to break down, getting brittle and break if bent. Could they have been in a store window with sunlight on them or in a store fire with heat or smoke damage. I don't know. I have never opened them up. One of them is a Bucklite Workman series.

Has anyone read anything in a knife chat area or mag about this..... I will say I do not like clam packs but I realize they cut costs.

I would think they cost more than a just a simple box with a label. I think its more about being able to display and have the security tag inside. I guess I can stick to buying a clamshell version, and if I like it ill just order one that comes in a box

I tried to open and keep a clam pack for a 529 Buckskin with sim lizzard. Came with a wallet. Like 300 said, got brittle and cracked. Never again, if I want one for collection, I'll hold out for a box. User? Toss it.

Just an fyi, if you are unsure if a product is even available in a box, look in the pricelist and it will tell,,, I know BCCI people get a catalog and pricelist every year,, not sure about the rest of you and catalogs!

Interesting thread, I have this clammie still sealed from an ebay purchase. Tried a few times to narrow down its age and closest I could come is about 2004, give or take. one of these days I'll take another buck to it.
