Bought a 4 MAX Scout and it arrived in the mail in clamshell packaging. This may have been happening for some time and I’m just unaware.
It gives it a cheap looking presentation, but if I pay less I’m all for it.

I too, have a nostalgia for the old Cold Steel boxes. However, my newest 4 Max arrived in the same blister-pak. No degradation in quality. Hard to argue, for a knife of this quality at a mere fifty-bones.

What's the fixed blade bolo-ish looking knife in the drawer? Looks interesting.

So far, I've only received two in clamshell . 4 Max Scout and AD15 Lite .

And both were bargain basement cheap ! So , hard to complain much . ;)

You know what, I think we all associate clamshell packaging with Wally World and the really low-end knives in their display (let’s be honest now). Plus they’re a pain is the a$$ to open….which is why I just use a strong pair of scissors. I remember reading an article once stating a crazy fact that a large amount number of ER visits due to bad cuts is the result of people try to open clamshells with knives/box cutters….slipping and slicing/stabbing themselves. Hence the strong kitchen shears/scissors, much safer.

1960s WWI bolo reproduction. Japanese made for Kiffe Sporting Goods. They came with new surplus WWI scabbards bought by Kiffe from a government auction I believe.

Yes. The story is that Kiffe, who was a pretty big NY sporting goods dealer, got stuck with a ton of WWI surplus bolo scabbards. After trying to sell them off with no success, they went to their Japanese supplier, and the Kiffe bolo was born. Yours looks very nice with the new handles :).

As to the Clam pack, these used to be denoted by an added "Z" at the end of the model number. I don't think it changed the wholesale or retail price compared to the boxed knives. It was mainly as a special to their bulk customers, and only on certain models that CS thought would have high sell through rates.

Will be interesting to see how far GSM goes with it.

lot of makers do both versions. boxes and clamshells. for different retailers who want one or the other. I know Buck does both for some models. clamshells mostly bought by box stores for the way they display them.

speaking on Buck I haven't seen any discount for the clamshell packaging. not sure if gsm is doing it.....could just be a coincidence.

Yeah I hate these things. I keep my boxes and store my knives in them, which I can't do with the new clamshells. I'm guessing that they're doing this as part of an in-store strategy, because a customer is more likely to be drawn to a product they can physically see instead of just a photo of the product on the box. It seems like it's something that they're doing for their budget variations of popular knives (the Scout being the cheaper version of the 4-Max. The blister pack I got was for an AD-15 Lite, cheaper version of the AD-15), which I guess makes sense because those are the ones that will be on the shelves of big box stores. I doubt that they're doing two different packaging methods concurrently for each model, because I bought mine from that online gun store (which has no storefront and would have opted for easily stackable boxes if that had been an option).
