Greetings,
I managed to get my hands on to old TL-29, from 50's.
Now it's been stored a looong while, and it's wrapped somekind wax and oiled paper mess.
(don't know surely)

Anyway, I was wondering how should I clean up that mess?
Should I just wash with warm water and some detergent,
and dry it up (somehow) and oil blades? (and wood scales?)
I don't wanna ruin blades, nor wooden scales,
so I'll ask what would be the best way to restore that oldie...

Thanks for any help!

here is a vid on some of the blades i come across for clean up........for me the wooden handles are never easy......99% of the time i lightly sand with 1200 grit paper and then rub down with tung oil........my buddy uses a mixture of shellac and BOILED linseed oil.....like 60/40 mix so it dries fast.....takes experimenting on other wood first.
have fun

Heat it gently with a hair dryer. That will soften and loosen most of the grease. Wipe as much as you can off.
WD 40 will remove the rest easily.
Stay away from sandpaper!

I'm sorry, Max- but your video is a classic "what not to do to your knife" video. I'm sure you mean well, but you should stick to wrenches.
Knives should not be treated that way.

bill are you saying i should not clean them up and remove all the rust and crap from being mistreat for the last unknown number of years.

i did not hurt them just removed outer nasty......people bring me many knives, axes, machetes for clean up. they are treated well.

what would you suggest........i do not have any wrenches.

Okay, will do! :)
I'll let you guys know how I managed, when finished with a knife.

I would suggest that you never work on any knives that have collector value!

Agreed, if you wanna clean try a nondestructive method of cleaning, buffing wheel softens all the grind lines and removes any patina a/k/a value. If you're lookin' to maintain historical integrity the less you do the better. If you wanna just clean the rust off a user I'd still refer t instructions for nondestructive cleaning. Usually it involves carefully using old and wd40 to lift off the rust without buffing out any character or any of the crispness in the blade grinds.

most of what i do are just knives people want cleaned up and stuff that want to use.......80% carbon steel items.
methods vary as do items used..... same for opinions.
for me my methods work extremely well.
