Cleaning a classic leverlock knife

My grandfather has given me a Hubertus leverlock knife. It's been sitting in a box for years, but it looks pretty good, considering this fact. However, it does have some rust spots on the inside of the handle and the back of the handle, some blueness on the brass bolsters, and the blade doesn't open all the way. I've always wanted a leverlock knife, and I'd love to get this knife back to its former glory, or at least a little of it. I'd take it apart and clean it, but it is pinned together, and I'd have no idea how to get it back together, even if I could get it apart in the first place. Another concern is that the spring is worn out, and must be replaced. I'm hoping the knife just needs to be cleaned and oiled, but I really have no idea what it needs. I'd absolutely love some help with this, either on how to get it apart, clean it, and put it back together, or on how to clean it without taking it apart. Thanks!

You might try soaking it in some mineral oil in a zip lock baggie for a day or two and see if it loosens up. Then wash out in some HOT soapy water followed by a rinse in alcohol to remove any left over moisture. Then see what needs further attention and go from there. Good luck, as I have some knives passed down from relatives that mean a lot to me, and I know where you are coming from.

Blessings,

Omar

I am authorized by Hubertus to repair their knives. Soak the knife down with WD 40. Let it set for a day or two. Then wipe it dry.
Your bolsters are not brass, they are nickel silver. A light polish with Neverdull wadding or Simichrome polish will brighten them. Don't get the polish in the workings of the knife, and don't use Brasso!
Once the knife is clean and dry, if it still doesn't open all the way-apply a dab of lithium automotive grease to the tang of the blade where it rubs the backspring.
If it still doesn't open all the way, post a picture of the blade well showing the kickspring.

Then just spray the metal areas. A little WD 40 won't hurt the wood.
