Cleaning Belt sander belts

I currently use a belt sander for sharpening. And I know that with sharpening on a benchstone, and you have alot of metal loading up the stone it's not good and interferes with sharpening. Does anyone clean their belts? I have no problem so far with the belts, but just wondering if keeping the belts clean makes them last longer.

I believe there is a belt cleaner available, though don't know where to send you to find any info on it, but I am sure someone on here will chip in. Seems like it is an eraser type cleaner. It cleans the buildup on the belt and clears the grit back up for longer life. Here is a link to Harbour Freight's belt cleaner.

Yeah I've seen those wax bars before, but do you yourself actually use it?

I have never used it myself, as I don't have a belt sander other than the Work Sharp Knife and Tool sharpener. On my paper wheels, I clean the grit wheel with a small toothbrush type wire brush to clean up the build-up of wax and residue on the wheel.

I have and use the crepe rubber blocks for belt sanding and even keep smaller chunks around for hand sanding. They can substantially increase the life of a belt or paper - well worth the small bit of $ - one block will last for years.

I was going to say the same thing. I have used one for years on my belts. On the cheap, you can purchase cheap shoes or boots from the Goodwill or Salvation Army that have crepe rubber soles and cut the heels off and use that. Just turn the belt sander on and run the rubber over the belt. It takes a few seconds to clean the belt up. It will cost next to nothing.

i have been using a small wire brush to clean my belts for years along with the grit wheel when it gets loaded up with metal particles.

the crepe rubber is more for cleaning off wood or antler particles stuck in the belt.

I use one, it works good for cleaning off the sawdust after making scales for a knife.
