Cleaning ceramic rods?

I would like to know if there's anyway to clean ceramic rods completely (lansky crock sticks). I tried ultra fine steel wool but I feel like I made the problem worse because after I was done touching up my pm2 it felt like there was a lot of drag while cutting notebook paper but I could've also messed up the edge while i was trying to remove very small rust spots with steel wool (which didn't work either) I tried to avoid the edge but I hit it a couple times. But I digress. I just want to know the best way to clean ceramic rods. I've heard erasers work? is this true?

Of the abrasive powders, barkeeper's friend works best since it's acidic and will help loosen or dissolve all but the most stubborn stainless residue, the abrasive will take care of the rest most of the time. A toothbrush works but I like to use those green or blue scotchbrite pads.

The erasers work well for on the go. Once you've built up a layer of the fine metal dust, use Comet or Ajax with the green 3M pads and water to clean it. As you just found out, steel wool is not the best cleaner for your ceramic stones.

Agree with the above posts. According to Sal at Spyderco you can put them in the dish washer too. I tried it once and didn't think that they were as clean as when I use the plastic scouring pad and bar keepers friend.

I tried out the the tooth brush with comet and it worked for the most part. There are still small stripes of metal but they dont seem to be inhibiting sharpening but im sure it will work better when i go to pick up some scotchbright pads. Would I be able to pick of the barekeepers stuff up at walmart? I know they have scotch bright and if they have that too i could just kill two birds with one stone (or should i say blade ;) )

Anyway. The comet worked a lot better then the soap and toothbrush i was using before. Thanks guys. Hope this also helps someone in the future.

Yes, in all likelihood, you'll be able to find the BKF at Walmart. I don't immediately remember where I got mine (either grocery store or Walmart), but I know I've seen it at Walmart, since then (think my Dad picked some up there, in fact). It's generally found alongside the Comet/Ajax and other powdered kitchen cleansers.

Get rid of Comet and Ajax and use Barkeeper's Friend for all your kitchen and ceramic stone cleaning needs. We got rid of those other cleaners years ago. The green Scotch scrubbers are exactly what you want. The stones will come out looking like new. Just shake a bit (enough to make a paste) into a damp scrubber and get busy. 30-60 seconds later, done.

I'm sure you'll find BF easily at most markets. I've also seen it at both Lowe's and HD.

If BKF is acidic as stated in post #8 it would be great for ceramic rods but I would check if its safe for granite and marble counter tops before recommending using it all over your kitchen.

I use BKF to clean my stainless & ceramic cookware and kitchen knives. It puts a nice sheen on stainless. It also works great on solid top stoves and stainless appliances. I don't know about granite as I use a special cleaner & polish for my counter tops. Look for Bon Ami if you can't locate BKF as it works just as good.

Yep, it's in walmart next to all the other kitchen cleaners, about 2 bucks a can. It'll last a LONG time used for cleaning ceramic sharpening stones, so use it for any stainless sinks or cookwear you have.

Thanks guys. I wonder if i could use the stuff to clean up my soda can stove. would it get very small rust spots off s30v?

Yes. If you make a paste with the powder & water, use a Q-tip to dab it on individual spots at a time. If the spots are light, you might not even need to scrub it. Let it sit for ~30 seconds or so, then wipe it off and rinse thoroughly. The oxalic acid in it will etch steel, if left on too long. That's why you want to make sure it's all rinsed off.

^ Thanks David. I got some rust on my para 2 from work (I spent an entire day soaked in water). A Majority of it came off with just rubbing alcohol and a little elbow grease but there are these very tiny black spots that don't want to go away. I tried WD-40 and Ultra fine steel wool and all that did was get rid of some scratches left over from sharpening and dull my edge. I've considered acid etching it anyway so I may just do that if it will do the job if not oh well.

I hope this works because My para 2 is my favorite knife and while I would like to get some more in various colors and steels when the money and knives become available I'd like to keep my original In as best condition as possible. So thank you again

I tried the barkeepers friend along with the scotch bright pads to remove the rust and it did not work.
