Hey all,

What are you using to clean packaging tape residue off your blades? I have a black coated G10 Spyderco that has the sticky crap all over it. Damn you Amazon!

What is the best solution to this problem that won’t discolour the blade?

Thanks!

Rubbing alcohol works great and I’ve never seen it do anything to coating besides clean it.

WD40, assuming you have some of that handy and it works great for that.

Also if you need stronger measures: Goo Gone.

Scientifically the only known method, once tape glue contamination has occurred, is to place the blade in a Bessemer furnace along with a pound or two of borax flux and stew until thoroughly thin and separated . . .then role the billet into blade stock and grind and heat treat to taste.

This is why I ALWAYS cut boxes with my loyal and lovely Gerber EAB Lite.

Damn you Amazon
(the best place to buy the EAB Lite is Amazon.)
Rigged system or perfection . . . I leave it to you, dear reader, to decide.

The first part of your post is a given, but using my trusty Gerber is a good idea for sticky tape. Plus us Canadians use duct tape on everything which is even messier! Cheaper knife it is...

WD40 is my go to spray to remove sticky residue from anything metal.

It works. Basically, anything in the group of WD40/naptha/kerosene/mineral spirits/lighter fluid are similar, they are a form of petroleum distillates. I just use WD40 or mineral spirits for any kind of degreasing of parts, gunk cleaning, etc. Any of these that folks have on hand should work, they are typically "aliphatic hydrocarbons" with a very similar chemical composition, and they all work as solvents. WD40 I like especially because it is proven to be so relatively mild and non-harmful to typical materials found in knives, including coatings. Whenever WD40 doesn't cut it for me, then I pull out the big guns and try Goo Gone. :) A while back I got a new DMT diamond plate, it had the most insanely tough and gooey label on the bottom of it I think I've ever seen. WD40 wouldn't even dent it. It took like 5x applications of Goo Gone, waiting a few minutes for it to soak, and then scrubbing hard with scotch pad and a plastic paint scraper, to finally get it all off.

Just want to share with folks here. Please do not put super glue on your blade and let it sit there for more than one minute. The other day I cut open the tip of a super glue tube with my Delica zdp-189 and left a drop of the glue on the blade accidentally for a couple of minutes. It took me quite a few minutes to try all sorts of methods to remove the half dried glue. In the end, I did but the glue left a kind of shiny sops on the blade:(

Best solution I've ever used is Zippo Lighter fluid. It is also good for removing lubrication. It's also know as VM&P Naphtha.
