Does anyone else get a sense of satisfaction from cleaning up some of their knives?

I’ve spent few hours today removing patina and polishing some knives up that I’ve just purchased.

Only down side is I do it all by hand I need get a nice tool to do it for me. Dremel or bench polishing wheel? Any recommendations

Nice job!

I clean, polish and oil my knives from time to time but polishing is my least favorite to do cause my hands get tired and cramp up. I have used my Dremel tool for buff polishing on the really scratchy, rough ones but usually on normal care just some Flitz a rag and a bit of effort is all it takes.

On many of my 112's I have attractive patina over scratches..I don't want all of the older ones with a shiny new look. But I am going to do some of the fancy ones with horn and all of my Nickel silver frames.

I also do along the spine and clean re oil the wood if needed as some excess polish residue gets on the slabs. Thoroughly enjoy it but my mind think “must be an easier way”

I like patina on brass. But when one patinas badly it needs to be cleaned. But I don’t polish them just clean them.

I think you are better off by hand. The potential for damage is there with electric machines even if done carefully you will loose the corners and edges over time.

You did a nice job with the polishing and pictures.

I don't keep my knives in the sheaths which for some reason develops verdigris fast, I cleaned a knife put it back in the leather sheath and one month later it was developing verdigris. I now keep my knives in glass cases with moisture absorbing packets tucked around the sides. I have had them in the cases for over a year and not one needs to be polished. New knives that come off of eBay that is another matter, if they are scratched I start with crocus cloth to get the scratches out then I use a diamond polish paste and last I use a buffer and much of the time they come out cleaned and shine. Scratches on blades are harder to remove I just use diamond paste and work on them over and over being careful not to cut myself. It all depends what you start out with.

Yes, I have a 3 wheel system too and I don't know about seconds. But just to clean the frames on 5-7 knives would have taken me
1-3 minutes for each knife. But this takes room to set up, like in a garage. DM

I dig it. Grab a beer on a rainy day and polish up a few knives. Maybe have the radio on......

Grab another beer.
Or maybe coffee...... just not tea, I can't hold my pinkie out like that.

Every time I see this thread I think of The Rolling Stones song :p

:pI Can’t Get No Satisfaction :p

Probably shouldn’t listen to it while polishing sharp pointy things. o_O

:D:D Cause I’ve tried and I’ve tried! :p:D:D
