So what do you guys think last longer? cobalt or carbide tipped? any pros or cons of each? looking to buy some nice drill bits in common sizes but don't know which would be best

I recomend Solid Cobalt brill bit's for " Normal " drilling .

Get solid carbide for any " Mistakes" like when you forgot to drill a hole and the blade is Hardened.

Just my advice

Hammer,
If you are drilling annealed steel, regular bits will work fine. Carbide are needed and necessary for hardened steel. Waste of money for anything else.

well then its time to invest in a few of each then. just encase some of those mistakes happen. thanks for the info guys! any further opinions are welcome

Before you go out and spend an arm and leg on carbide bits I would recommend looking at the PC board bits. For the sizes we use they are not very expensive, 2 or 3 bucks each for the smaller ones, expect to pay maybe 15 dollars for 1/4 inch carbide tipped bit.

The solid carbide bits are brittle and are only to be used in drill press. If not, they WILL break.

I have a few in the more common sizes (22, 30, 41 and 1/4) that I rarely use.

KBC Tool has a cobalt drill bit set on sale right now for $90. That's a decent price for cobalt.

Cobalt is an element that is put into steel to resist softening when hot, so a 'cobalt' drill bit depends on what type of steel it is not whether it just has cobalt. Carbide is just that. drills are tipped (or solid I quess in small sizes)with carbide and are for special uses while the cobalt is used for most needs. BTW if you need to sharpen carbide bits diamond works fine.

well then i think i'll get a few of each, just some in common sizes... 1/6" to 1/4" should do me well i havent found myself working outside of those ranges yet.
