I mean I know how I do it...boiling water and an instant coffee packet. But when it comes to things coffee I am considered by some to be quite plebian.

I have a buddy that swears by his Nalgene (?) Coffee press.

How do you folks do it?

I've used the Folgers coffee pods, used instant, brought the top of a drip carafe and use it.

If I am in a hurry to hit the trail in the AM I like Instant the best because I can double the dose with the same amt of water:eek:

Speaking of this another really great trail snack at the end of the day when you have a few more miles to go is a litre of water, a handful of chocolate covered expresso beans, two aspirin and a Cliff Bar:D:thumbup:

Back in the 80's I had a small 1 cup alum. stove top expresso pot. It would actually make two cups and worked great on my Peak 1 stove. But as I got older and the 80's were fading out it started to look a wee bit too metrosexual to be using. So now I use a Melita cup top and cone filter which weighs much less and is faster.

I don't like instant coffee, so I use those "Singles". They work like tea bags, except it's coffee.

Those are cool but I roast my own coffe and need to find empty bags that I can fill. Aside from "camp coffee" with the grounds still in that is probably the lightest way to go.

Earl Gray or Darjeeling black loose leaf, sugar and powdered milk, sorry I never have developed a taste for coffee. I use a small screen tea ball, wouldn't that work for coffee too? Chris

I believe dried dandilion root makes good coffee.

Licorice Fern root, blackberry leaves+ berries and Grand fir needles makes a good fruit tea....had some yesterday !!!! If you have them also add some Salal berries !!!

Tea is good. I like it in an evening camp (Formosa Oolong or a variety from Laos). But it takes real coffee to satisfy me in the morning. I don't care for any instant I've ever tried. I get a pot of water to a rolling boil then remove it from the fire, add loose coffee grounds, set it back close to the fire to simmer and steep. WHen I figure it is nearly done, I add a dash of cold water to settle the grounds, then pour off a "cheater cup", a small cup of weak coffee to start. Then I keep dashing and drinking until I am satisfied or it becomes too weak. If the weather is really cold, or if I am camped next to a cool stream, I can set a metal pot on a cold rock or in shallow water to cool the bottom and settle the grounds. I have tried tying the grounds up in a coffee filter and using it like a tea bag, but it was a bit of trouble without much benifit over just settling the grounds with each pour.

I use one of these - just bring along ground coffee:

One method I've read about but never tried was to add some egg whites to the pot (boiling water & loose coffee grounds). I assume the egg cooked right away, trapping the grounds or something.

Folger's coffee in tea-bag style dunkers. Cheap and a little better than instant.

Java Juice coffee extract. Better than instant, but still not like fresh coffee. Quick and easy, not cheap though.

Melita #2 filter and holder (fits on a cup) -- best method for fresh brewed.

Bodum coffee press/mug combo Works good, but a pain to clean.

Instant coffee and tea bags for me. There is nothing like fresh brewed coffee, but while in the woods I just take the easy way out with instant.

Simplest way is Cowboy style, boil it right in the pot. You'll have to let it settle a bit before you pour and only real men go for the last cup in the pot.

(Really though, go with singles or instant, it's just so much easier.)

normally i use a press or a single serving "top cup" filter, BUT im gonna have to try the Cowboy style next outing.

Singles, or cowboy style filtered through a bandana into the cup, the cold shot of water to settle the grounds, or those MRE accessory pack coffee mixed with the cocoa
