FWIW, I bought one of these today. The waterproof bag appears to be a decent quality.
The whistle is a cheap Taiwaneese whistle but guess what??? It whistles. It won't replace my Storm or Fox but it is better than nothing.
There is a 50' roll of orange trail tape. My complaint here is the diameter of the opening in the roll is about 2". A lot of wasted space. A quick sqeeze fixed this but I am still not sure if it is worth the space.
The compass is about the diameter of a quarter. It is liquid filled with a small bubble. Non luminous.
Chem light. Expires 08/04. Not too bad. I don't trust Chem lights though.
A box of Waterproof Matches. Says they will survive being submerged for an hour! Might have to try that out.
50x80" Lightweight plastic hooded poncho. Better than nothing but not by much.
A small ziploc bag containing 2 single edged razor blades, 12' of white "rope" (kinda looks like 550 cord). A couple of large safety pins, a large needle, 3' of snare wire looks heavy duty, 35' of nylon cord, a small spool of thread, 30' of fishing line, 2 hooks and 2 sinkers.
A space blanket, looks pretty typical.
A 5 hour candle.
2 firesticks. I've used these before and they work pretty well.
A small plastic mirror. Very light weight. Totally adequate.
Some bandaids and a salt packet like you would get at a fast food resturant. 4 alcohol pads. I don't think these are worthwhile at all. Maybe as tinder??? and a pencil stub and a note pad.
All in all I think this is a pretty good deal. The manual that comes with it is basic and accurate from my quick scan. It all comes in a large pvc bag that can hold the kit if you have to use the waterproof bag as a canteen. I guess the outer bag would work as well. For the money this would be a decent kit for those who are not inclined to put their own together.
Like I said...FWIW
