Cold Steel Bushman and Mini Bushman

I got a Bushman today. It's my first and only CS knife. Not a big fan of a lot of their methods/tactics, etc. (like many of us), but I had to see what all the hype was about this knife. Well, I have to admit it's pretty awesome. It came extremely sharp NIB. I chopped up some cb boxes like they were nothing and lopped off some branches in the yard. I'm very impressed with comparing this to my BK7 especially since the Bushman cost me $22 shipped.

I was surprised at how strong these things were in noss4's knifetests.com spear test of them as well. Whether you like his stuff or not, the videos for the Bushman spear test are really cool. Any time a knife-tipped spear is shot out of a pressurized air cannon into things, that is pretty neat.

I know the Mini Bushman has been discontinued, but I was wondering if you guys knew of any site that was still selling them. Since these are so tough and cheap, I figured I'd pick one up in that size, too.

Nothing on ebay right now, but I'd guess they will pop up on there now and then. I was unable to find any sites otherwise that are selling the Minis.

If you guys have any comments about the knives themselves, I'd like to hear those too.

I have one. I think it's the mini bushman The sheath will easily let the knife fall out and I had trouble justifying buying a special sheath for such an inexpensive knife.

They do seem to cut well.

Not exactly sure where mine is at the moment...

I have the large Bushman. Makes a poor chopper, just not enough weight upfront. The blade vibrates too much due to how thin it is. Ah, and the slick smooth cold steel handle that feels like your hand is just about to slide right onto the cutting edge. It does cut pretty well. Certainly not a bad bang for the buck, just be careful with it.

I have both. Unfortunately, I have no leads on a Mini.

I dipped the handle a few times in Plasti Dip. Makes for a softer, slightly rubbery handle texture without adding much girth.

I find it's a reasonable chopper for it's size. The biggest problem with chopping, IMO, is the round handle. It's easy for the knife to twist in the hand while chopping such that the blade hits at an angle rather than perpendicular to the material to be cut. This forces the user to pay more visual attention to the knife rather than the target than he/she normally would (a significant distraction, IMO) when chopping with heavy swings. My little workaround is to tie a lanyard through the handle lengthwise such that it runs along the bottom of the handle, in line with the edge. This gives a tactile "anchor point" for my hand that doesn't require extra effort to consciously ensure the blade's orientation.

Personally, I find the sheaths adequate.

I agree it is rather light and thin and can be dangerous if not used properly since there is no real guard. I intend for this to be a beater/backup kind of knife. I definitely think it's great bang for the buck though.
Thanks for the replies.

shecky, good idea for the handle!

For the price I think they are a great deal. I just got my sone one for his birthday and plan on getting me the bowie version maybe when it comes out. I am going to get some rubber wrap from sportsmans warehouse for the handle.
