Cold Steel canes and such anyone?

I'm looking into buying a Cold Steel cane for my early morning walks, not to use as a cane but to fend off loose dogs.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm stuck between the African and the Irish walking stick and I don't know which one is better or worse.

are these the ones with a knife?

Nope, these are the hard plastic ones.

Oren, I have an African, and that knob is really too big for a comfortable grip -- and my hand isn't small. As a club, it's a great piece of gear, though.

Bushman5 had the Irish walking stick, and found the brown insert separated, broke off.

Well with the hexagonal ball knob I can understand that, looks awesome for defense but horrible to use as a cane.

I figured that the insert thing would crack, given the more parts you have the more likely one is going to be a problem.

So then I guess that rules the Irish out, I really don't like the city ones, and the walk about seems a bit too expensive, isn't as indestructible.

I have heard good reports from canemasters.com

If I had a issue I would get one in a heartbeat.

I have a Purpleheart Walkabout. It is as close to indestructible as you'd need. More so than the polypropylene sticks.

I also have two Canemasters, which are my regular walking sticks. The best.

I also have a Mendowood stick, which is awesome, but I really need a crooktop for daily use.

EDIT: when interpreted, the law states that a cane weighted by lead is illegal, so long as these are weighted by another metal, they should be legal.

CA penal code 012020 (I think that is right) explains the legality of weighted canes. I now think you are in the clear.

Sorry, I got exited

Those city stick canes are illegal in california. The legal term is that a "weighted" cane is prohibited. It is written in the same code that states which knives are illegal I believe. I would read up on it if I were you. There may be room for interpretation, but CA usually interprets these kinds of thing in the extreme.

Just something to think about, I am not trying to tell you what to do. In fact I really like the pistol grip model.

Yeah the city canes, but not the African or walkabout.

I'll look into a walkabout, but I may have found a "solution" I'm working on reinforcing and fashioning a "dog stick" out of an unpainted wooden broom handle (for my uses it's basically a big wooden dowel), I think I'll either lacquer it, or paint it, and add a rubberized grip.

Here is my reference and a quote:

is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year
or in the state prison:

Alright, well as long as it's not leaded then it should be fine. I can understand outlawing leaded canes since you don't need lead in your cane to help you walk.

But hard polypropylene or wood canes should be fine.

Unless California decides to outlaw tree branches...

Edit: You may be right, I just found this:

(17) As used in this section, a "leaded cane" means a staff,
crutch, stick, rod, pole, or similar device, unnaturally weighted
with lead.

It seems that the code does specifically state that if lead is the added material it is illegal, so we can assume that any other type of metal used to weight a cane is therefore legal to possess.

I think I might buy one:D:thumbup:

right off the bat, the CS blackthorn is complete and utter GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad: mine broke at the head, and CS FAILED to honor a warranty. I broke the second one i was given by a friend, SAME SPOT (head). Again CS failed to warranty it.

the african is nukeproof, the walkabout is nukeproof, the city stick id nukeproof.

nope, the African is VERY comfortable to hold and use, and it is nukeproof. I have beat mine on concrete over and over, it has never failed. It got run over by my buds jeep , still unbroken,

WHOA ESAV, where did you score a Purpleheart walkabout?:eek::eek::eek::eek: I WANT!

A long time ago. Not a comfortable grip with that pear-shaped head. I tried to trim it to a balltop, but it's so hard, I just laid it aside.

FWIW

There are other options than buying a "brand $ name" readily recognized as battle canes...

Livestock canes are solid hickory run about ten dollars at most feed stores you can cut them to size and customize. Cut the crook into a "duck bill" for hooking, and sand in several finger grooves along the shaft.

It's fairly easy to place a brass harness hain as a handle on a straight cane. They are solid brass and have a brass ball that fits the palm nicely and will break cinder blocks.

Crepe myrtle branches make very nice shafts.
