I was thinking of buying a Cold Steel Dragonfly Katana, and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this weapon? Is it worth the cost, or are there better ones out there? Mainly plan to have it displayed, but want something solid that could take a beating if for some odd reason I feel the need to do so. I currently have a replica katana from Nobel which cost me about a $100, so I'm looking to move up to something more "real." Thanks.

The cold steel line is tough, but not very traditional. They're really blade heavy and balance funny, and they arent even very pretty in my opinion compared to other blades you can get around the same price. For that price there's really quite a few options, and there are some cheaper blades id recommend over the cold steel. Some of the better ones are Paul Chens higher level stuff, dynasty forge, last legends, and bugei trading company. The last legends line is nice, and theres a lot of different options you can choose from to get a semi-custom sword. Cheness makes some pretty nice, inexpensive stuff that would probably suit you pretty well for a lot less money, though if you have it id recommend spending it ;). Customs are always nice too....

Azrael,

Thanks for the words. I've been looking online for the Paul Chen stuff. Does he have an official web site, or do you have to buy through some other guy? When I try and search all I get is "Big Bob's Discount Blades" type stuff. Thanks.

Bill,
Thanks for the advice, the 888 website seems like it has a lot of nice stuff. I've looked at the practicals, and they are pretty nice. However, what I'm looking for now is a NICE sword, more authentic then the practicals, but still able to beat someone down if I ever feel the need. I'm getting promoted (yeah me), and this'll be the last raise I get before the kid is born, so I figured I'd blow some money for the last time so my wife can't yell at me to much. :)
For the Paul Chen's I was looking at the PAUL CHEN 1201GT KAMI KATANA. I also recently got a catolog from Bugei, and their Crane Katana seems pretty nice. Both are around the same price range (Crane slightly cheaper). Anyone know much about either of these two swords/makers? Bugei claims to collaborate with Chen anyway, so it might be basically the same. Thanks.

If you want traditional, go to Japan ;) - there are some good user pieces around for 3000-5000 or so, depending on where and how you look. If you're looking for a pretty decent "show and use" piece, despite it being "non-traditional" then consider both Angus Trim-ASA collaborations, and the higher end Bugei and/or Paul Chen pieces.
Browse these:
http://liveblade.com/
http://dynastyforge.com/
http://www.swordstore.com/
http://www.huanuosword.com/e/asp/english/index.asp - Fred Chen direct apparently

Do consider phoning or emailing the owners/managers of the sites, I'm sure they'd be more than willing to discuss your needs.
And of course, consider an American/European custom smith creation.
