Hi, i recently purchased the Cold Steel FGX Karambit tactical knife knowing that its was made of some sort of fibre-glass material. But much to my disappointment I realised that the actual "blade" was not sharp at all. Ok the tip of it was pointed enough but the "blade" was about as sharp as a kids toy knife for a kitchen set!!:grumpy:

To some up what i think of it, i would have to say its just a training knife. The handle was fantastic, and was very easy to grip well but then all of that admiration for the knife disappeared as soon as i went to test the sharpness of the blade.

I bought the knife thinking wow, worlds sharpest knives eh? and when I took out this "sharp" knife I soon realised it was little more than a plasting training piece.

I would like to hear your opinions on this knife and if anybody owns one, then I would like to know if you agree with me! :(

Don't sell it short as a weapon and please don't train with it. This item can be used as a pummel and the sharp tip can rip flesh and penetrate clothing. If you want to try to sharpen the blade, I don't think you'll hurt it and it may be possible to use a file to give it an edge. As it comes, though, it's capable of cutting.

Again, this isn't for opening boxes -- it's a weapon, and should be treated as such. These things have been used against people and animals. If you need something more, get something steel.

ok, but im doubtfull that it could cause any harm. Maybe a little flesh wound, nothing more. Sorry but it really i disappointing!

I have one. I bought it out of curiosity since it was only ten bucks. I haven't used it for anything though.

Look at it this way, you'll have the sharpest Karambit on the airplane!

KIDDING!!!!!!!

haha yeh, well over here is more £££ it paid £16.01 altogether, so disappointed.... :|

Ok, I don't own one of these things but have often thought of purchasing one. I noticed that the FGX Skean Dhu has a serrated blade. Perhaps it can actually cut pretty well. Does anybody know?

I've got the extra long FGX pushdagger, as it looks like it'll do more damage than any of the other designs. It's got a shock absorbing Kraton grip, and with all your weight behind it, it'll slip right in, as only the tip needs to penetrate and the rest will follow. . .. . .

Supposedly the FGX "Nightshade" series is designed as an economical and "sterile" throwaway shank. IMHO, it's best quality (next to the price) is the fact that they're invulnerable to the elements, which means that you can hide them in areas where a high carbon steel blade would quickly be reduced to rust (like in the soil of a potted plant, or under the rear bumper of your vehicle).

I keep mine hanging from a hook in the shower . . . who needs a "rubber ducky"?

The kerambit and tanto versions don't seem nearly as effective as the pushdaggers or the mini Culloden, which are quite pointed. You can try sharpening the edge with a file, but I wouldn't bother . . . doubt if you could cut paper or slice through a sandwich cleanly, and I rather doubt that those serrations will provide much of an improvement . . . you could maybe use 'em to saw through a piece of corrigated cardboard! :p

I have a FGX Boot Blade, it's a pointy toy for "action kids" - rather disappointig. :(
But my FGX Cat Tanto worked well, when I dig a hole in the soil or cut frozen snow pieces in the field. (I tried to make with it some snow bricks.)

haha man they really shouldn't call it a knife at all. The nightshade series should be called " Kids Nightshade series - If you want a plastic knife!"

Well, I've got the Karambit and a few other FGX models. They are not knives. They're designed as last ditch weapons, and the edges on any of them make them dangerous. The Karambit is sharp enough to open most UPS packages, I've found. Mine has a very sharp point and would be a formidible self defense tool.

To the guys who have bought the Karambit... have you watched any of the training videos on the proper fighting style used with that type of weapon?

I suspect if you used it as intended it may actually be quite effective.

I'm considering one ver seriously.

Oh boy! Here we go again. Read this pleaze y'all.
Remember the saying, "you pay peanuts, you get monkeys?"
Well, unless I am mistaken none of the known attractively priced plastic cutlery wares have been known to be able to keep any edge, that is, if such a state does indeed exist to begin with. To put it bluntly, these "weapons" are not slashers PERIOD. Need I say more? Also, if you do buy them for whatever the reason, please be certain never to allow minors to get their hands on 'em. "Unfortunate", is when seemingly harmless toys turn deadly. And we certainly don't appreciate that, ever. Respect the law and abide by the rules.

I don't think we need knives like this....I can't think of a legitimate reason for this other than to sneak it into illegal places....this is just begging for more unecessary knife legislation.

I have 2 FGX karambits and frankly I've been disappointed. Tip broke on one. On the other hand I'm quite pleased with the FGX skean dhu. Saved me in a robbery attempt. I highly recommend it. After dark the skean dhu is practically invisible when wielded as my robber friend discovered when suddenly it was at his throat. He lost interest real quick.

IF your looking for a great self defense push dagger the mercworx Seraphym is the best one I have ever used (better be for 225$) I preffer the push dagger over the karambit only because I think a punching motion with a knife can do alot more dammage than a slashing motion with the karambit.

This particular gentleman walked up to me on a street corner, after dark. After a very short conversation, he put his hand in his coat and told me to give him all my money. I said "okay" and went inside my jacket and as soon as I grabbed my little skean dhu with my right hand, I grabbed his "gun hand" with my left hand, pinning it to his chest and pinned him to a fixed object and, at the sametime, bringing the point of the skean dhu to his throat. He went limp and started screaming and I ran my hand along his, inside his coat. to find that he had no gun. When I let him go, he was in such a hurry to get away he almost got hit by a car. I'll take a little plastic skean dhu over an imaginary gun any day of the week.

This was the second time someone has tried to rob me.

Look at it this way:
Push daggers are generally used for punching (sometimes slashing) to vital targets.
Kerambits are generally used for cutting/trapping/disarming mainly by attacking the limbs (aka-defanging the snake). Then moving in for more vital targets if necessary.

Although, the kerambit has more of a utilitarian value than the push dagger:
You could say they are specialized blades for specialized purposes. Both are effective in thier own way. I carry both.

Another point: steel knives will outperform the plastic variants in most every way. Why do you need a plastic knife? What are you using the knife for?

I bought it thinking it was made of a special material, and was shocked when i found out it was little more than a plastic knife...
Right now im not using the knife for anything! Sitting at home in my drawer heh.

at the risk of sounding like a pompous ass - what did u expect from a plastic knife?i have a couple and,as mentioned above, realise it's a last ditch weapon.while spinning 1 i dropped it point first[murphys knife law-if u drop a knife onto a hard surface it will fall point first everytime] and it snapped off
