I have a Ka-bar as my utility/outdoor knife already. Is it worth the $250+ for the chopping/size advantage of the Kukri? Also if you own one tell me how well it stands up to abuse. Or is it better to just buy the Combat kukri by Ka-bar?

I am obviously biased :D but I've seen the Gurkha Kukri do some great work.
That knife has been extensively field tested many times in different climates and conditions and it's held up to everything we've thrown at it.

As an outdoor / camp / survival knife it's heavy for sure, far from the lightest option out there...but I honestly believe it can do the work of a good camp axe as well as having all the advantages of a big knife.
I've seen a guy cut down a small tree and skin a buffalo with the same knife :)

As a last ditch self defense option - which I hope you would never need it for! - I think there are very few edged tools that truly compare to it. I've witnessed members of our crew perform cutting feats that are huge for a sword let alone a knife!

Again, I'm sure my opinion can be considered biased but I have had the pleasure of seeing a lot of extensive testing with this particular knife (including our recent PROOF video shoots a few weeks ago) and I think it's hard to beat.
I'd highly recommend it

After seeing the videos...I'm impressed. Is it worth the money getting the San Mai III? How does the cheaper model compare?

Soon the steel on the SK-5 model is being replaced with O-1 tool steel, which many seem to consider to be a major improvement. I would always recommend carbon steel over stainless steel for outdoor use. As a weapon, however, I would recommend the San Mai III. It comes with a convex edge too, if my memory serves me correctly.

I have the old Carbon V version. I love the way it feels in hand. I haven't done anything with it yet...but it's the star of my knife collection and probably always will be.

Oh is the Carbon V the coated one? I saw that one and wanted that... I like coated better than non-coated. Yeah it'll be for outdoor use mostly. Ill be joining the Marines in 2 years time and probably will bring my Ka-bar...much more managable

In a word: YES. :D

I only have the Ghurka Kukri Lite, or Mini-Kukri but its a fierce blade, especially on sappier vegetation. Remember it was designed for a jungle environment. I live in a sub-tropical climate so have lots of fast-growing, water guzzling plants. That's what it works best on.
