I was looking at a few lower cost folding knives for EDC and came across the Immortal by Cold Steel. I have no experience with cold steel products but have heard nothing but good (aside from their marketing tactics)

I really like the specs on this one, and was curious if anyone with experience could give me some of the good/bad.

Cold Steel has some great blades. The Immortal seems very impractical for actual use, and I have seen some video reviews of it that corroborated that sentiment. The Recon 1, American Lawman, and Ultimate Hunter are in the same price range and are all exceptional knives with great steel, a great lock, and are a bargain price wise. One of those three would be my recommendation, with the Recon fist if you like a larger blade and the Lawman if you like a smaller blade. If you really want to spend some money the 4Max is a beast and is an awesome blade too.

You are correct, CS makes a pretty good product if you can get past the marketing. I currently have one CS product, the Code 4 clip point. Solid knife, I just prefer G10 to metal handles. I don't like the look of the Immortal coupled with the tanto blade but that is personal taste of course. I would agree with jstn, I would look at the Ultimate Hunter, Goldeneye, Recon 1, or Lawman.

Something to keep in mind. Many CS knives have multiple, finger slots cut into the handles. If your hands are small or big, they might not sit well when gripping the handles. I prefer a more neutral handle shape myself (ie. no slots) which is why the Ultimate Hunter is my first choice. The Immortal does have that going for it. Either way, I think you will be happy with your CS. Good luck.

Very good points here OP. If you want the Immortal though, go for it and don’t look back.

yes

I like a lot of Cold Steel folders. I didn't like the Immortal. Handle wasn't comfortable for me. Another negative was that it was oversharpened such that the main edge wasn't flat. For a tanto especially, I find that unforgivable.

I'd recommend the Recon 1, Hold Out II or Large Voyager.

WARNING! : Cold Steel knives are like Pringles, once you pop you don't stop! The Immortal doesn't appeal to me personally. But I am sure it's made with great quality and lock strength. Oh yea and sharp as Hell!

Awesome knife, with a great grip but somewhat slippery handle, as slippery as a Stainless Spyderco Police.
Does not bother me much, tho.

Yes. I recently traded into a Code 4. It's my only Cold Steel. I notice the slickness of the handle the most when I'm trying to draw from my pocket. The handle doesn't offer enough grip to easily allow me to overcome the resistance of the pocket clip so I find that very frequently, i grab for it and my finger slides off the handle before it comes out of the pocket. I really need to focus on grabbing around the screw holes. I have considered lightly sanding the scales to create an even, but textured surface.

Meh. I dont find that to be the case. They are good knives, but based on the one I own and the ones i have handled on many occasions, I don't find myself unrestrainedly yearning to pile them up.

It just happened to me that's all. I occasionally gift one out and they usually buy more. Too each their own...

Totally. And I'm really not saying they are bad at all. Quite the contrary. Cold Steel makes some very good stuff, and I'm very pleased with the one Cold Steel folder I currently have, the Code 4. It just happens that they don't tend to tickle me the way certain others do.

As others have said, yes they are slippery. Another reason I prefer G10 or micarta. It's a great knife, perfect size imo, but the only knock is the slippery handles. I'd buy some aftermarket G10 handles if I could find some or I might even attempt to make some myself.

I have an old school Recon 1 and a 1st Gen 4Max. Kinda both ends of the Cold Steel spectrum. I'd recommend them both.

One thing to be aware of with the Immortal is the lock bar spring. It's not made like their regular Tri-Ads, but like the Swift assisted opener. Early Swifts had issues with broken springs, though I haven't heard of the issue continuing since the latest version came out (they're supposed to be heat treated differently now), and I haven't heard of a single issue with the Immortal so far. I'm not suggesting it's a "problem," just pointing out that the Immortal is constructed a bit differently from most Tri-Ad knives, if that matters to you.

edit: For reference, here's how other Tri-Ads are built, with the traditional flat spring riding in the back spacer:

I love CS, but don't have this knife . It is basically a stubby , folding gladius . Primarily a stabbing knife for fighting . CS has many better choices for EDC .

Initially I quite liked the OTT look of the Immortal but would never buy it - cant see myself neither carrying it nor using it.

The Immortal a tanto - thats not my impression but I might have missed something or misread?

I agree in rgds to the Recon over the Immortal.

Yes it's designed with straight edges. My main edge was curved toward the base due to oversharpening at the factory.

From CS ad copy:
The Immortal’s eye-catching and unusual blade is ground almost like an extra wide Tanto point...
